olds 350 with #8 heads mild build

Got a olds 350 with #8 heads from an Eldorado.

Looking to make a decent street engine to replace the 7a head 307 olds in my 1986 cutlass.

Seems like flat-tops is the way to go. Is there an entire engine kit I can buy with the pistons. Or just got to dish out the $400 for the sealed power ones and buy a rebuild kit too.

Camshaft options. I got 3.73 open gears on a 2004r. Goal is to regear down to 3.23 and hope to get 18-20mpg with the combo. PRetty much getting that with the 307. There's a local junkyard owned by a olds enthusiast. He'll very likely have a A4 intake. I love quadrajets so no change there.

Rockers. What the budget setup to convert the rocker arms. Can I use stock chevy rockers. Or is there a good budget roller rocker for chevy 350's I can use. Any advise on pushrods and guides would be good too.

lock-up. I'd still like to have it on the car. Not sure if I want to keep the CC carb on the car or not. If I change, then I need another way for the lock-u to work. 4th grear pressure switch plus a throttle switch work?

exhaust. I love and hate headers. Any other options other than plugging the y-pipe to get true duals. The car has monte carlo SS stainless cat back exhaust system. Would like to save a few bucks and run the manifolds into them.

I'd be happy in the 280 to 300 hp range.

Yes, Flat top pistons with a clean up on the deck and heads will put you right around 9 to 1 with #8 heads. Stay mild on the cam for mileage, something like the Lunati High Efficiency 207/207 .461/.461 112 LSA camshaft should be meet your goals but I am no expert. Your current converter should stall around 1900 if it is regular D9, should work OK. I would add a stator, pump rings, stiffer slide spring and the big Transgo kit with the servo along with bottom feed filter set up to help the 2004R live. The TCI lock up kit works good but will probably need the vacuum switch adjusted. I used Sanderson shorties, they fit your car with no denting and have 1 5/8" primary tubes with 3/8" flanges. I would run aluminum or Copper 3" collector gaskets, otherwise they are good. They fit nearly as tight as manifolds and no doubt flow better. I had custom 2.5" down pipes tied into a compact X pipe that went into a Hooker cat back exhaust, worked very well. I personally wouldn't go below 3.42 gears, with a 25" tall tire at 60 mph with the GPS with 3.42 gears 1850 rpm. What tire size and highway speeds do you drive? If you stay open in the 7.5" rear, upgrade to the Yukon spider gears, the stock ones explode, ask me how I know. For the CCC, you could try it, if it runs shitty, go with a regular late 70's 800 cfm 350 or 403 Qjet and HEI from the same. The smog Qjet work OK as is with a kit on a mild engine but will be on the lean side.

IT's got 235/60/15's on it. I drive 50 miles one way to work and would still like to drive it 2 or 3 times a week. I also go up to the mountains often, about a 3 hour drive in 65 mph zone. I drive just under where you get a speeding ticket.

I got a decent assortment of q-jet metering rods from toying with GTO's and trans ams for the past 20 years. Now I'm on the oldsmobile side.....

The overall plan might be to build up a nice 350, then do a re-ring and swap in a set of 5a heads on my 307. Then use the 350 olds engine for a low-rider I've been working on. I got a rebuilt TH350 sitting in my garage for the past 12 years too....

Been doing fast for years, just want enough HP to warrant the exhaust noise on my car, and not be shown up with someone new Hyundai at the stoplight....

Also, does the CC carb system also run the cruise control, or is that an entirely stand alone feature....

The CC carb might stay. Does the earlier CC carb distributors from a 81-84 olds without a roller cam have the same wiring as my roller cam one. I was lead to believe the gears are somewhat different. If not just by compatible materials to the metals far as wear, but maybe in physical size too.

Lastly, this old nut I know. He might have some old performance manifolds. Maybe an edelbrock performer RPM or offenhauser. Will these manifold clear the hood fine? I'm under the assumption a plain edelbrock performer isn't really a performance increase over an A4.

Keep the 2004R and either use your current 3.73 gears or go 3.42. With those 26" tall tires you will sit at right around 2000 rpm at 60, don't go lower than 3.42 which will only drop 150 rpm. You just need to ground the black and yellow wire at the speed sensor for the cruise to work. You only need the 12 volt power wire for the regular HEI, just tuck away the 7 pin harness. Just make sure the primary metering rods match the series of Qjet, other than the float, nearly everything else swaps over. The 350 done right will lose a small amount of mpg and gain a bunch of torque and horsepower.
