Gauge question

Hi everyone! I have what might be a silly question. I'm in the market for an affordable gauge cluster (water temp, oil pressure, and voltage) and I was wondering if these units are pretty universal, or if there are specs that I need to stay within to work on my stock 1972 Cutlass Supreme?
Thanks!
Chris

They are pretty much universal. I like the mechanical oil pressure and water temp gauges. The volt meter works off a keyed power wire. Its a simple hookup you can do in an afternoon. I used the Sunpro brand but they were bought out by Bosch. There are still some available under the Sunpro label at Amazon.

I much prefer those 270º sweep gauges over the 90º sweep style. Much easier to read at a glance while driving.

Assuming you are talking about aftermarket gauge panels, the only thing you need to worry about is that the sending units match the gauges. Aftermarket electrical gauges usually require you to purchase the senders separately. Also be aware of thread sizes in your motor and availability of ports - specifically for the temp sender.

If you decide on a mechanical oil gauge, spring for a braided line vs the plastic tubing they come with. You need a 5 foot line by the way.

Most come with plastic or copper line.

Where do you get a 5' line? All I can find are 3 and 4 but Jegs shows one that is 6 feet (which seems kinda long):

Thanks so much guys! Do the plastic lines tend to leak in the car?

I see no reason to buy a braided line. Basically its a rubber hose inside of a braided sleeve. Although I have never had a plastic line leak, if your that concerned just get the copper one.

No I got a "semi retro" new in the package sunpro mini gauge set from 1990 that I saw for sale. Its a mechanical set and It seems like it might fit right behind the ash tray door, which I think would be cool. Plus since it was a bit older already it had a different look to it than the newer ones, which I like.

No issues since installation in 1981.

Same here. I've never had a problem with a plastic line on an oil pressure gauge.

I had one plastic and one braided line leak. The braided line with 4 feet long and stretched to fit. I find 5 feet is perfect since it plugs into the front of the motor. I used the Longacre 5 ft for the last couple of years https://m.summitracing.com/parts/lng-45050 and I just bought this one https://m.summitracing.com/parts/aaf-all46110-60
