Thank you for the info.
Yes I do have the motor. The motor is in my 85 442. The car was setting in the garage for 12 years I had blow the bottom bearings. I was looking for a olds motor and everyone was telling me to get a chevy 350 crate motor. After looking around I found a 76 olds thinking it was a 403 motor, I still picked it up for $700.00. After removing the motor and trans. My friend seen the valve cover saying W-31 so I checked the #'s on the motor and found that it is a 350 W-31 motor. I opened the motor up and it was clean and the same for the TH400 trans. I put a new Edelbrock 600cfm, new drivestaft and exhaust system dual with flowmasters. As soon as I can figure out how I can post pic I will do so. Thank you

If you truly have a W-31 motor, you have a piece of gold. Check for the thick vibration dampener. Those are tough to replace and are a tell tale sign of the W-31. The motor will rev to 7000 unlike a stock 350.
Let us know what you find.

Realy, I would never of know that an olds motor would rev to 7000. The #'s on the block 395558 2 on the heads 403 859 6 on the back of the motor by the distributer the #'s read CFD 174 13 does this mean anything.

No, the numbers don't mean anything to me. And I can't readily check mine since the car is cocooned for the winter. Check that harmonic balancer of yours and see how thick it is. Plus the motor will not want to idle well under 800 rpm and the vacuum will be under 10 lbs. at idle.
But get it over 3000 RPM and it wants more
Oh, and THANKS for the complement

Okay, I will check tonight and you are right about the idle thats why I asked about the timing if I was doing something wrong. Let me ask you this do you think that the 600cfm carb okay?

600 CFM should be fine. I ran a 650 Holley spread bore and performance was virtually the same between that and the stock Rochester.

Idle speed should be set at 625 RPM, in Drive, with the AC off.

Here's a picture of the W-31 balancer. I believe that the stock issue is 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 " thick.
