Noob question - numbered main caps

Unfortunately my caps were not attached to the short block i bought. I see they are numbered 1-4 and i understand what order they go in due to the cap with the thrust bearing. However, does the orientation matter as far as which way each main goes? Is the side with the casted # supposed to be on the d/s or p/s? I googled as was unable to find any relevant information.

Thanks in advance

My memory may be dyslexic, but I believe that if you are staring down the crank from the front of the engine toward the back, with the engine upside down (bearings-up), the numbers are on your left side.

Use the bearing tabs on the inside of the caps. The side with the little notch must be on the same side as the matching notch in the block. Note that they are slightly offset from each other so one is not directly on top of the other.

Also, same goes for the rods, and the cap MUST stay with the rod it came from.
If you haven't assembled an engine before then it'd be a very good idea to get someone local to help you out.

For the years I have used, the main cap only goes on one way; the driver's side bolt is offset from the bearing bore differently from the passenger side bolt. Looking at an E 400 block, the numbers are on the driver's side and the notches in the caps and block are on the passenger side.
