Engine decoding?

I know this is a sin but when I bought my Cutlass someone had already swapped out the V6 for a small block V8 chevy engine. I would like to get a olds 455 someday but I have to run this engine for awhile If anyone can decode the block numbers or knows of a site that can Please help. All of the sites I can find only go up to 1986 and I know for a fact that the engine is atleast a 1987.

If you're asking about decoding Chevy casting numbers, Google "chevy casting numbers".

All 455s have that block casting number.
The VIN derivative 34M108562 shows it to be a 1974 block (the second number), which would originally have J heads.

motor codes 455

so the number with the F is on all 455 motors?I have another question everyone says the J heads are the worst? right I am wondering if you are trying to get the best gas mileage instead power if that still holds true ???? I know it sounds funny but with gas prices today it is something to keep in mind I think. Also at one time this motor I have in my shop now was in a 71 Delta 88 4 door hard top. Allot of guys don,t believe me but I got 28 miles to the gallon highway miles so I figure if I put this motor and transmission in a car that weighs 1000 less or more I should get the 28 MPG or better

The biggest factor in whether you'll get 28 mpg highway will be the rear end gear ratio. But you'd do even better with a 350 and a modern overdrive transmission.

If you're building a low-rpm 455 for maximum fuel economy, the J heads will be fine.

I have a 9 inch ford rear end 3.0 what do you think about that gear ratio think it is high enough? As you can tell I am new at doing this? I have a good running 350 I thought about connecting a S 10 5 speed to that and then the 3.0 9 inch ford ?????????
