Bad Pulley or Bad Shaft on Power Steering?

Hello!

The pulley on my 1967 Cutlass Supreme w/ 330 V8 started rattling and became loose on the P/S shaft. I removed it and I am trying to figure out if:

A. It is the pulley, shaft, or pump that has gone bad
B. Where to find a replacement single thread pulley (if thats what it is)
C. Why the pulley went bad.

Here are a few photos for reference.
Number on pulley is 382418J0

First time posting! Super excited to see that this community exists.

Welcome to the site. Was the woodruff key in the slot? Is there play in the bearing for the shaft? Does the pulley slide on snug?

Its looking like the woodruff key is missing completely. Are those standard to replace? Any particularly reason it fell out? Also, there is nothing between the pulley and the pump. Should there be a washer/bearing/spacer?

The pulley may bottom out on the shoulder on the shaft, which would keep it away from the pump.

You can get a woodruff key at any hardware or auto parts store. Take your pump and pulley to ensure you get the right one.

Hello again.

I put the pump back together with a new woodruff key but, alas, the pulley is still lose and rattling which leads me to believe the pulley is stripped out. Does anyone know where to find those sort of pulleys? They appear to be hard to find.

Define "loose". This pulley only has a hole that slips over the shaft. There isn't anything to "strip out". Are you saying that the pulley can be rocked on the shaft? Was the key missing previously, causing the pulley to spin on the shaft and wearing one or the other (or both)? Is the nut properly tightened?

By the way, the photos in your first post are too small to tell any of this.

The pulley can be rocked on the shaft with belt on. When I pulled it apart the key was missing, leading me to think it was sheared off. Though minimal, there were some metal shavings on the shaft and pulley. So, yes, I do think one or both may have been worn out. The nut is tight, though I've read that on these pumps the nut isn't supposed to be what tightens the pulley down.

Also, all that is on the shaft is the pulley and nut (no washers, spacers, etc..) Is something missing there?

Really appreciate the help!

If the pulley rocks on the shaft, I'd say both are suspect.

Does anyone know if a pulley from a later year or another 1967 GM car would be compatible?
