350 rocket dog off the line

I got the recurve kit for my distributor and installed one light and one medium spring to try and get the mechanical advance in quicker.the way it was my timing wasn't all in until like 4000 rpms .Here is where im at now, initial is set at 18 degrees i am all in at 3100 rpms and i have to set my dial back timing light on 40 to get back to 0 .so does that tells me i have 22 degrees of mechanical? this is with the vac advance disconnected and plugged .i did check my vac advance and im getting about 10 degrees advance out of that .cant test drive the car because it pouring out.im also running the newly rebuilt quadrajet so there is tuning there that needs to be done.If i want to get in the 36 total range do i simply retard my initial 2 degrees ? or do i have to some how limit my mechanical?

I found 36 total to run best at the track. On the street, 38 to 40 felt faster, more responsive but slower at the track. Test drive it first and then play around. Yes, just retard it 2 degrees until it feels best. Yes it sounds like 22 mechanical, pretty sure my new HEI is similar on my 260. I would like to see at least 10 degrees more vacuum advance, low compression Olds V8's like a lot of vacuum advance. I am currently running 21 base, 18 mechanical and 12 vacuum. It feels much better part throttle than 15 base with the other numbers the same on a 9 to 1 350.

Thanks olds 307 . Good info I will play around with it when I can get a decent day .i have adjustable vac can so should be able to pull a little more vacuum advance out of it

Things didnt go as planned ! Took the car a for a test drive today and ran like crap spitting sputtering bogging under load.seems pig rich right now.the only thing i did to the distributor was change the springs out and all my timing stuff seemed good.maybe the quadrajet needs to be jetted down and looked into .i just rebuilt it with 73 jets and 46 rods and seems way too rich.Time to put stuff away forget about it for a while and go hunting

its the original 1972 350 quadrajet. it had 70 jets and rods that i cant identify in it.i may have jumped up too high .It seems rich to me when i throttle it up i get raw gas all around the secondary air flaps as well as around the choke plate(plate is all the way open when hot)float is set at .25 inches.and it burns my eyes while trying to tune it.i have a 73 455 rebuilt quad i may try on it before i put it to bed this fall.My mistake here was doing 2 things at once should have figured out the timing curve first then messed with the carb

Yah, 3 jet sizes is a lot. Probably a 71 jet would have been a good starting place. My 403 factory carb was 73 jets and 44K rods. My Holley reman 350/403 replacement carb had 71 jets and 44K rods. The reman carb was perfect on a 307, Ok on a 350 and borderline too lean on a 403.

the reason i went with this combo was because another member had good results with it and nearly my exact setup .But! not all engines are all alike. ill play with it when i get time but my priorities are shifting now. thanks for all the advice everyone
