215 noisy lifter?

I hope I did right moving this thread from F-85 section but now i am talking about the engine. My apologies if I am in the wrong section.

I recently picked up this 62 F-85 with the 215 4bbl. A PO had removed the remanufactured engine from the car because he thought he had a bad lifter, making a ticking noise.
I believe he broke the oil pump housing upon engine removal so there the car and engine sat for an unknown period of time. That is the story I got from the guy I bought the car from.
Upon my investigative tear down, the pictures showed what I found.
I am tempted to just gasket it up and run it.
Thoughts?
Thank you,
Steve

If the cylinder wall looks good you can probably re-gasket. At a minimum, leak test the cylinder with a liquid poured in it and two other cylinders as a comparison to see if the rings are ok. Leak test all of the valves also with vacuum (quick and clean) or a liquid. Replace the valve seals while the head is off it's easier than using compressed air.

Good luck!!!

I think you can see it stuck to the head, looks like the remains of a cotter key.
There looks to be a nice score in one of the cylinder walls, shown in the first picture. This was supposed a remanufactured motor with very low miles on it before the noise. But the pan looks black and some sludge. The marks on the poston do not look deep, So I think I will just be out the gaskets and an oil pump and hope for the best.
Thank you for looking and the advice,
Steve

I would check the bearings on that rod.

^^^ Agree to check that rod bearing.

What about smoothing out the chamber some to avoid hotspots???

Wow, if that really is a cotter pin could be someone wanted to sabotage that engine. Or do you think it was a piece of carb linkage that fell down the carb? Either way good thing it got shut down and checked before it destroyed the piston, etc.

Check the valves/valve seats for that cylinder also.
Maybe a real light deburr on the top of the piston.

All sound like good ideas, talked with my machine shop buddy and first thing he said was pull the piston and gently deburr it to avoid hot spots. Guess I will pull the valves too and gently deburr the head and check the seats for damage.
I got a used timing cover to replace the oil pump.
When I took the old cover off there was no oil slinger, is there supposed to be one on the 215? Chilton seems to think there is. I will check Motors.

Thank you all again for your advice and input.

Steve

If you're going to remove the pistons you MAW run a hone in the cylinders. I agree with the others about using Plastigauge to check your bearing clearances.
