1970 Holiday Coupe 350 rebuild

I know there are already threads on this topic, but none of them answer all the questions I have so I'll start fresh. I'm having the motor rebuilt in the 70 Cutlass I purchased and have a few questions. I want to beef it up some since I'm going through all this. I was initially thinking cam, intake, carb, headers, and probably different gears...as I'm assuming my buddy called it a, "gutless Cutlass" for a reason! I'm not looking for a quarter mile king, just want it better in town but still want decent gears for the highway. Johnson Machine at our local NAPA has a good reputation but their labor is going to run me about two grand. I can list everything they will do for that if it helps. Basically I'm looking for a good setup and am wanting advice on what to purchase so when they do the work they can put in the new components. I'd like the advice of an experienced mechanic who can give me a grocery list to go shopping with. I've read the Edelbrock 600 isn't much better than the Quadrejet that's on there now. Don't know if that's true or not. I heard the Demon carb was alright. I also read about grinding the AIR(?) bumps to improve flow. I don't think NAPA will do that for me but I'm willing to with some guidance, unless someone highly advises against it. Anything else I should consider here? Lifters? Pistons? Tranny considerations? Stall converter? Gear ratio with recommended motor setup? Good advice much appreciated!

Get the dished speed pro forged pistons, LF2321, I believe in whatever oversize you need. Talk to Mark, Cutlassefi about a cam and lifters, stock auto cam is awful. The Cloyes billet roller is a nice timing set.The Street Demon in 625 cfm is a much better carb than the 600 Edelbrock. You stock Qjet is also much better as well. The only off the shelf gears for your car are 3.42 and 3.90 gears. The 3.42 gears with tall tires 275/60R15's would run at about 2700 rpm at 60 mph. Monzaz or 507Olds build rear ends and may have 3.08 or 3.23 gears and carriers for your type O if you want lower rpms. Or you could upgrade to a TH2004R trans, runs about 1000 rpm on the highway vs your current TH350.

Yes, list what they're going to do and for what price. That would be helpful.

Labor estimate

Here is the labor estimate from NAPA. I don't necessarily need all of this, but the majority of it I will.

Thanks so far Gents.

Looking at Summit for parts here's what I've found so far;

1. Cloyes Gear C-3006K - Cloyes Heavy-Duty Timing Sets
2. Demon Carburetion 1901 - Demon Carburetion Street Demon Carburetors
3. Edelbrock 3711 - Edelbrock Performer Intake Manifolds
4. Edelbrock 8514 - Edelbrock Intake Manifold Bolt Kits
5. Fel-Pro MS96027 - Fel-Pro Valley Pan Gaskets
6. Fel-Pro TCS45270 - Fel-Pro Timing Cover Gaskets
7. Hedman Hedders 58190 - Hedman Street Headers

and a new oil pan to replace the bashed in one that's currently on the car...along with freeze plugs and a few other things.

I see the pistons that "olds 307" is suggesting. I can't find any cam at all on Summit's site that works in my car. Any suggestions on mild cam/lifter combo?

There should be lots of Olds v-8 cam choices on Summit's site.

cutlassefi should be able to give you a good recommendation on a cam as that is his business.

Thanks Fun. With that...I see your stall there and was looking at this cam as well;

1. COMP Cams 42-223-4 - COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshafts
2. Hughes Performance GM25-BPO - Hughes Performance Street Master Torque Converters

That's not really what I would call a mild cam.

COMP Cams 42-223-4 - COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Camshaft
Lift: 0.485 int./0.490 exh.
Duration @ .050": 224 int./230 exh.

That's the same cam I have in my engine. I had forgotten that Lunati bought out Harold Brookshire's designs from UltraDyne.

You also need the Felpro 96009 intake valley pan. The Felpro 96027 has a larger exhaust cross over that may leak with due to the smaller cross over passage in your heads.

I'm rebuilding my 69' 350. I ordered the Felpro 96027 with #5 heads. So you're suggestion I should change over to the Felpro 96009 too? Thanks

Yes, the crossover passage is larger on later heads so there may be leakage.
