Valve cover removal

I have a l952 Olds Super 88. I want to remove the valve covers to repaint them with the least amount of damage but they just won't budge. Is there a special tool I have to use? Any help would be appreciated. The engine is not out of the car so I'm working under the hood to do the job.

Thanks!
Jerry

use a thin screw driver and gently tap it between the head and cover with a rubber mallet.

I use a length of 2x4 lumber place it length wise along the valve cover and tap on the 2x4 with a hammer. You can use a bit of force without damage to your valve cover. Don't just hit in one spot either walk your hammer taps along the full length of the 2x4.
