Have a 1971 Cutlass SX with matching engine block and transmission. Had a timing chain failure backing out of garage. Doing a complete rebuild of the engine. Looking to also replace the starter with a hi-torque starter. Purchased one at JEGS, but not happy that it was built in Taiwan. Found out that it doesn't fit the 455 under carriage. Does anyone know where you can purchase a hi-torque starter for a 455 engine that doesn't need to be tweeked with a lot of shims to make it fit? Did anyone replace their starter on this type of engine?

Nope direct fit. Adjustable as well. Not sure if usa or not. I have been using one since 2007 with no problems on a 468 ci race engine. I am editing this post. The powermaster 9510 is made in the USA jeggs sell it for around $210. I have two of these on two different cars they work well. My buddy has one on his F85 he loves it. These are great for cars with headers.

Not saying it is a bad starter as a matter of fact that is a good price!!It just doesn't look like a powermaster 9510 to me but it may be. I tried a summit starter and they plain suck!!! The post is in the way when you have headers and i am running 2 inch ARH on one car. The other has Hooker supercomps 1 3/4. I have also used the 9510 with 2 inch hooker supercomps the one that goes around frame.
