6 to 8pt cage

My car currently has a 6pt cage. It has the normal pts in the trunk, behind the seat and next to the front seats. If my car goes 135mph or faster and is 9.99 in the quarter or faster I need to convert to 8pt if I read the book right? Where do I need to put the new bars to conform to nhra rules?

I believe you have to go 10 pt unless they changed the rules and I know it has to be certified to 8.50 when you go into 9.99 or faster, bars come off main hoop down to door bars and across windshield for 2 pts and bars off main hoop towards trans tunnel for other 2 pts, that's works as long as you have stock firewall and floors, better have old one checked first before you add to it ,its got to be the right thickness they check it for certification, I had to tear mine out and put complete new one in

Ok I was just curious. My current setup for the former owner was supposed to be around 10.3-10.5 in the quarter at 130-133mph. It's a 6pt caged car but if I decided to go with more power I most likely would need to step up to a certified cage and get a license. Thanks for the help!

no problem.a lot of these old 6 pt bars wont pass with adding new bars because they were wrong to begin with, since its just local track checking anything slower than 9.99 and need no certification

From what I was told at purchase time, the cage was professionaly done which it does look like but on the other hand from what you said it could still be too thin. I guess I'll need to get the thickness checked. Do you know what that thickness is for certification?

I assume you have mild steel, 1 3/4 tube diameter and .118 thickness . chrome moly is different, best bet is to buy a nhra rulebook unless you take it to somebody that knows the rules.there are other things you have to do other than the rollbar. your local track checks when you go 9.99 or quicker. those items have nothing to do with certification.

How much was it for your current cage and for it to be welded in?

Mild steel can be MIG or TIG welded. Chrome moly, only TIG is accepted by NHRA. Many older roll bars were stick welded and that is not accepted now.

should be able to get it done for 1000-1500 including cage, my car has a 14 pt its tube chassis car, my guy builds his own cages , if you buy a kit there are a lot of good welders out there to choose from, go to chris alstons chassisworks if you want to see a few good diagrams of cages and prices for kits, lot of companies building roll bar kits some are better than others
