Back in the 10 sec ride
This past weekend was the first time out this season with my 1972 442 as I have been racing my 87 442 & the Cutlass W-31. It was so nice to have a completely trouble free weekend & to be back in the 10s.
I won nothing but I had a great time. Fun is what it is all about.
10 passes on the weekend in Medicine Hat AB. Best corrected altitude I saw was 3550' & the worst was 4600'. Most runs right at 4000' corrected.
11.052 @ 120.57 mph / 1.517 60’ (out of the trailer on cold tires)
10.990 @ 120.30 mph / 1.488 60’
11.000 @ 119.97 mph / 1.474 60’
11.024 @ 120.12 mph / 1.474 60’ (1st round loss)
10.979 @ 120.12 mph / 1.487 60’ (buy back win)
10.983 @ 115.1 mph / 1.474 60’ (lifted but broke out by 0.007 sec)
10.993 @ 119.99 mph / 1.476 60’ (T&T)
10.977 @ 120.16 mph / 1.482 60’
10.990 @ 120.47 mph / 1.475 60’
10.977 @ 120.15 mph / 1.496 60’ (broke out again....grrrr)
sea level corrected the car would run 10.6s @ 123 mph.
Looking forward to next time already!

524
The 524 is a 1970 irrigation block bored out with a stroked 1968 forged steel crank. It has custom Ross pistons & Eagle Chevy rods. It is an Ed headed 11.2:1 compression engine that I shift at 5800 rpm & runs all day long on 94 octane. The builder is Wayne Joss out of Lethbridge AB. Same builder who designed & built my 470 cid SBO.
It leaves at 1000 rpm idle like this

maybe this is not were you wanted your thread to go so just say so it its not. But What are Ed heads iron E heads or Edelbrock ? How long has it been together and what did he do to keep the block as one ? Do you have a good thread on the basics of the car sound like a bad *** .

Ed heads = Edelbrock heads. Sorry for the abbreviation.
The engine is large displacement but it is not & never will be the baddest thing around. I never intended it to be. It has been together for many seasons. I broke the crank in it a few years back & replaced it & carried on. The best dyno results showed 662 hp @ 4900 & 704 TQ @ 4875. The car is heavy & I run at 4000' plus corrected altitude so the car runs slower than one would expect. No shame in a pump gas 10 sec ride though. Some day I will take it to Mission BC & lay down a 10.50 pass.
The engine was discussed at length on the old ROP. I was not intending to discuss it here. I made a deal with the builder many years ago not to reveal the bore & stroke combo. I know that pisses people off but I gave my word & I am keeping it. The builder's reasons for not disclosing the bore & stroke are his own. Please don't lose any sleep over this engine. It is not a ground breaking engine just a big CID which others could easily duplicate. It uses a 1050 dominator on a Victor with a 650ish lift solid lifter cam.
I really was just expressing my happiness about having a trouble free weekend of racing & how much I enjoyed getting back into my 10 sec ride. I have struggled with my 87 442 this years having blown up the trans for a second time & I was disappointed with my Cutlass W-31 not getting into the 13s. I had not run this car since last August & it was so nice to just change the oil, warm up the tires & let her rip!

Nice ! i could not see the photo at work . I Would be proud of those numbers too. Most of the ROP stuff i click on is gone, So if you dont mind i got more questions like whats with the bumper vents on the front ? Did you make the hood looks like a 69 road runner sort of . How many track in your area are they full 1320 or are they shrinking ?

irrigation block
My engine builder was & still is in the irrigation business, although he also builds competition oriented big block Chevy, & big & small block Mopar engines too. This is just an old pumping unit. It moved water from causeways to fields for decades before it was retired. Typically these irrigation engines run on compressed natural gas & will run for 10s of thousands of hours at 1500-2000 rpm. The block was used because of its' thick walls as seen in the sonic check. This facilitated a much larger bore than is typically attempted. Add in a stroked forged steel 455 crank & you have cubic inches. Very low tech & very simple way to make low rpm TQ.

Calgary lost its track 2 years ago. I use to live 10 mins from the track. Now I have a 2.5 hour tow to Edmonton or a 3 hour tow to Medicine Hat to race in Alberta. Both tracks are 1/4 mi. With luck we will have a new drag strip & motor sports facility in Calgary in a few years. Travelling to race is very expensive.

Car
A little late but Dave your car is working great and some consistent numbers to. Car launches great out of the hole. What's your suspension secrets, obviously all that torque helps. Thanks Glen
