500hp 455 Olds - smallest cam ???

Hello guys. What is the smallest cam that can be used to make 500hp at the flywheel/flex plate out a 455 olds with stock Edelbrock heads? Flat tappet or hydraulic roller.

Intake would be the Edelbrock air-gap or torker intake. Compression ratio is 10.2. Harland Sharp roller rockers used. Any other info needed, let me know.

Thanks

With bone stock Edelbrocks I would say .550-.575 lift and 240-245 intake duration @.050 With some port work. 500-.550 and 230-235@ .050 intake

I'll 2nd that. I think those are pretty good guidelines. And a similar sized roller vs. flat tappet will give you a bit more.

Thanks for the info. I have a hydraulic roller cam that I bought on ebay years ago but never installed it. It was one of those regrinds by Utility Components. I'm going to have my machine shop check it out before I install it, but the advertised numbers are:

236/242 288/294 .555/.576 lift @ .050 112LCA

If the specs check out on the cam, would this make 500hp on stock Edelbrocks or will I need some port work help?

The 112 will hurt peak power but you'll get close, maybe use 1.7 rockers.
I'd have someone check the cam for hardness, those regrinds can be iffy. You need 400 or so on the nose so that's worth having it checked.

I used a Comp Cams XE284H (240/246, .541/.544, 110 lsa, 106 int c/l) with out of the box Edelbrock's, Performer intake, 1 3/4" headers, shifting at 5200 and crossing at 5600. It went 10.96 at 120 weighing 3450 lbs. That works out to right about 500 hp.

That's pretty impressive. Would you consider that cam streetable? My car will be predominantly street-driven. I'd like for it to participate in the power tour one day with my grand kids.

Hey just curious what the rest of your setup is. I have the same cam, I don't think I'm coming close to those numbers, at least 2 secs off. I think my 3.23 in the rear is hurting me.

Lets see----I have a .030 over 455. Eagle rods and CRP flat top pistons. All balanced.....850 carb---Victor intake, stock Edelbrock heads, Harland Sharp roller rockers, Rhoades V-Max (I think) lifters. Crank trigger, MSD digital-plus ignition, ATI balancer, Flex plate, custom 9" converter and turbo 400 trans (All of that from ATI) Car is back halved ladder bar 9" Ford with 4.44 gears and 31X14 Hoosiers. I leave around 1800 and shift at 5200 in the 1/8 and 5500 in the 1/4. Raced at Roxboro NC last time out and it went 6.82 @ 103+..........

Our engines are very similar except for carb and mani. The biggest difference is the gears. Thanks!

Not sure what kind of hp I'm making with my 455 build, but since you mentioned streetable, thought I'd throw it in. Cam is a Crane hydraulic .536/.560 lift with 238/248 duration @ .050. Heads are Dave Smith SS polished, ported cc'd figuring 10.25 compresion with TRW forged pistons. Lifters are Crane Hi Intensity's that bleed down a bit. Crane tech moved cam grind out to 114 LSA for better idle. With MSD AL igniton, idle is pretty good. Driveline is completed by 3.73 axle and 700R4 transmission. Car runs strong, yet can idle in traffic, no problem. With the od tranny, even fuel milage is livable.

I have almost the same setup, 455 060 over trw pistons, childs and albert pins, speed pro rings, C heads ported and polished, ss valves, Lunati Cam 544,565 lift 256 duration, 433 posi in a 69 w30 coupe 4 spd and my best time was 11.67 112 mph, I thought it was 122 and I found the card the other day, my old 70 442 ran 10.96 at 122mph. I have to work on my suspension to get a better holeshot.

Ran mine Sat in South Carolina and it was running 6.81 6.82 all night ( we started at 3pm) 103mph. I imagine thats high 10s in the 1/8. If I remember right when it was running 7.00s in the 1/8 it went 10.90 in the 1/4
