So just wanted some outside opinions on header wrap. Personally I think they look cool, and I'm to lazy to sand and paint my headers. But apparently they have thermo benefits much help with gas flow exiting the exhaust faster, and keeps the engine bay cooler!

But I've also heard they are a fire hazard and they are in fact bad for the headers... not sure which is true and which is not true.

Not sure if I replied in the other thread or not...

I have cheap coated headers. I wrapped the tubes that are close to the oil filter and starter, and also the collectors to keep heat away from the floor. It only lasted a few years and then started to fray and fall apart. I removed the wrap and the headers were fine underneath. I re-wrapped them and away I went.

That's an interesting idea! Never thought of doing that. May be using that idea for my car. Thank you!

It's all true, except for the helping gas flow bit. That one's a stretch.

Depends on the headers and the wrap. The more expensive stuff lasts longer, the cheap black stuff needs maintenance. Either one can hold water which will cause cheap headers to rust faster.

The best reasons to do it are:
1) Hide rusted/ugly headers
2) Reduce under-hood temps or help insulate starter/filter

I had an exciting moment. ATF soaked header wrap is VERY flammable. Self igniting, even.

I used to use it on a dyno mule engine, stock Ford 5.0 stainless headers. It kept the heat in, we were running 02 sensor torture testing and one point of the cycle exhaust temps were controlled to 1600F. I think it was more due to temps but the headers used to get brittle and split and crack after about 800hrs. No splitting without but had to run the engine much harder so split headers it was
