how much to pay for a 200r4 core

Hello,

I'm looking for 200r4 to have rebuilt. I found a couple on craigslist. One is $750 and the other $500. What is the going rate for a core?

Thanks,
Pat

That is to much for a core. I see them sell for $300 and less. You will also want to know what it came out of. Some are better than others to start with.

how much to pay for a 200r4 core

The cores out of Buick GNs command more money because they have some factory upgrades.

I bought a 200 4r core a few years ago from a local pick a part for about $70.00. As Eric said, you want to get one from a '86-'88? v8 car if you can. The later transmissions had better internal parts from the factory than the earlier years.
Try a local parts yard.

Thanks for information. I guess the one for 500 came out of an 86 buick regal. I'll look around some more to see what I can find.

Ah, question. Is this any V8 car or just the 442/GN? Would the 200's from any 307(V8 Cutlass, Cadillac Brougham, etc) be the same, or were the regular V8 trans's the same as the V6 ones?

I found a site that listed "donor" cars that would have the 200 4r in them.

· 1981-'90 de Ville and Brougham
· 1981-'88 Buick LeSabre, Electra RWD, Chevelle, Monte, Malibu and El Camino
· 1982-'90 Chevrolet Impala, Caprice, Olds Delta 88, 98 and Custom Cruiser
· 1984-'87 GMC Caballero and Pontiac Grand Prix
· 1983-'88 Olds Cutlass 442 and Supreme
· 1983-'89 Parisienne and Safari Wagon
· 1981-'87 Buick Regal
· 1981 Buick Century and Pontiac with 301

The site I got it from is below.

Last year I bought a core out of a Monte SS for $100 (picked up.) The way I understand it, you'll need to rebuild/modify it regardless of what it came out of - the difference is the starting point for the rebuild. There's lot's of info out there (on this site and others (Turbo Buick board.)

KZF -- Olds 442/Hurst
CZF -- 85-88 Monte SS
CRF -- 85-88 LG4 305 powered Monte Carlos/Pontiac Grand Prix
BRF -- 86-87 GN/T-Type/Turbo Regals
BQ -- 84-85 GN/T-Type/Turbo Regals
BR -- 83 Model T-Types
TAF -- 89 Turbo Trans Am
OZ -- Hurst Olds
OM -- Olds 350 Diesels
OG -- lds 307
BY -- V-6 252 Cars
AA and AP -- Cadillac's

Okay why would a Monte Carlo SS have a 200R4 in it? They had 305's, why wouldn't they have a 700?

305 = not much torque & 200 4r had the overdrive for efficiency.

Remember, the 200R4 has the dual bolt pattern to bolt up to a Chevy and a BOP motor.

A BRF is the GN transmission and in stock fourm, you are not going to get a better 200R4. After the BRF it is the KZF then the CZF, after that I really don't know which is the best but I know the OG is the worst you can get next to the V6 cars.

GN and Turbo Buick guys swear by the 200R4. It can be built up as strong as the 700R4 and has a much better 1st gear. Anybody that will flat out say, "No the 700 is better than the 200 all day long" is falling victim to the "Brainwashed Chevy sydrome"

But to answer the question, unless it's one of the Trannys I mentioned, I wouldn't pay more than $100 fora core. I've seen a CZF core for $100 around here

I didn't know the 200 had the dual bolt pattern. Heck I learned something. Thanks.

So if a core gets rebuilt anyway, what makes one better to start with than another? Case differences maybe?

The case will be the same. The difference in the models listed will mostly be important if using them in stock form. If you are using in stock form, the Buick Grand National will be the best.
If you're putting this behind big block, please use a reputable builder as these transmissions were not designed for that kind of torque.

MOST 200-4R transmissions have a dual bolt pattern. Early ones are BOP-only. As for price of a core, $50-$150 is about right. Heck, I paid $200 for a complete Custom Cruiser with a good 200-4R and a running 307.
