1970 Cutlass Convertible Seat Belts w/shoulder belts

Subject heading says it all. I'd prefer black but I think I'm gonna be flexible unless someone out there makes repros... haven't figured that out yet.

I thought I posted those measurements before but I can't find them. I've done some research on 3 point belts. Specifically on the fact that in these old convertible the mounting point for the shoulder belt is low. Basically the point that a shoulder belt should be mounted is 15 degrees above or below the shoulder of the occupant. In these old convertibles its about 30 degrees below the shoulder, articles I read said that could be dangerous - just an FYI

I just pulled a set of shoulder belts from a 1970 Cutlass convertible if you need them or any measurements?

Hey that's really nice of you. I think I am just gonna help her sell this one as is, at least at first. If it doesn't bring a number she likes, I'll take it and fix it up for me.

Shoulder belts

I was told these are shoulder belts. Not positive, but I thought I would share them here just in case.

those are but from a hardtop - I'm pretty sure the convertible shoulder belts had one hole for mounting but its been so long I can't remember.

Those buckles don't look like any that I have seen on any 70-72 Cutlass.

Steven you are correct. The convertibles used a one large bolt & nut mount that mounted to the convertible top frame behind the cylinder cover. They had a plastic sleeve that protected the fabric from wear that slipped between the cylinder cover and the side panel. I just removed a pair of these from a convertible I am junking but did not have time to get pictures of them yet. That style of buckle pictured above was often used in Chevys and Pontiacs.

Pics?

Stumbled into this thread - I didn't even know shoulder belts were available for a convertible. Can some post pics so I can see how they look and are mounted? I already see where I can purchase them but have no idea how/where they are mounted in the car. It will make my wife very happy. Thanks!

See post #4, although they do add a sense of safety and I am not an MD, you can let your wife know thee is research out there that says they can do more harm than good. I only put them on occasionally, since they stay in a fix position (unlike modern ones that only have tension when stopping) they can get uncomfortable too.

Sounds like a double edged sword . wear them and maybe compress your spine or not and find out how tasty the dash or steering wheel is . i haven't decided if I will add them or not .

Yes, I see your original post now, thanks. Ran into the same thing with my '69 Corvair convertible and decided against all the work involved as well as the safety aspect. I sold the car instead for something a whole lot bigger.

If nothing else, they may save you from being thrown from the car, especially in a rollover, but Im not sure I want to be IN the car during a roll over either.

Yep, I tell people my old convertibles are basically a motorcycle with two extra wheels, you need to be very aware when driving them and I learned the hard way this weekend even when opening a door when parked.
