Sounds like you may have had an 88 trunk lid installed at some time as 65 Starfire doesn't have individual trunk letters. OLDSMOBILE is cast into the ribbed rear end trim panel beween trunk lid and bumper.

"Correctness" aside, it will likely be cheaper just to buy the one letter than replace and possibly have to paint the lid unnecessarily. I suggest watching eBay like a hawk.
