Even if you get a new switch, the old one may be repairable. The 72's are easy to repair, yours may be the same if physically intact. Usually the contacts inside get burned and need repolishing. And since it does not work anyway, why not try! Spares are nice to have.

My luck repairing that switch was "not too good!" I think I got the last NOS one in GMPD system some time around 1995, or so the dealer said. After a couple years even it worked only marginally better than the original.

If cleaning/repairing doesn't work, go to any good electronic supply and get a SPDT (single pole, double throw, ON-OFF-ON) spring return toggle switch and its faceplate. I had one of them on my 73 for a couple years until I decided I HAD to have the OE switch, and it worked great. I found one with a paddle, cut its underdash bracket down to fit flush on the dash, and then used dry transfer lettering to duplicate the factory switch. Solder some 12 gage leads to the switch, then use bullet male connectors to connect the new switch to the harness. Odds are it will work as well as or better than the chintzy OE switch.

As is said, necessity is the mother of invention!
