If that doesn't work I have a 425 block (389244D) with small lifters and its original caps, which interchange with 455s. I would sell the block in the same price range as a set of caps. You could use the block with either crank, 425 or 455 (with slight grinding to clear the connecting rod nuts). Donnellyj@msn.com

I don't know if this means the machine shop isn't capable of performing a line bore, or has excessively high labor costs. I suspect there will be a lot of folks happy to take that old block off your hands for scrap value.

Well I don't know the cost because every machine shop I call tell me to get another block instead getting more caps. They act like it's hard or it'll never work.

I'd be curious what, exactly, you asked them. I'd simply ask how much is a line bore on a 455 Olds. Main caps were NOT hand-fitted on the production line. They were machined to specific tolerances, then line bored.

Olds production tolerances were much better than the chevy junk the machine shops are used to working on. You didn't have lots of Olds cams wearing out, because the lifter bores were crooked and the lifters wouldn't spin, like chevies.

Hey Rosco, I noticed you're in Blue Island. I'm down the street in Alsip. I had my sbo machine work and rebuild from Heartbreaker race engines in Oak Lawn. His name is Al. Decent guy and did a nice job on my engine. Might be worth a call to him.

Thabks for the suggestion. I’ve called a lot of shops and they say to get another block or get new steel caps. They were saying that the caps are always shifting one way and a lot of times you’ll never get it to align properly. I’m going the new block route most likely. Thabks again for suggestion though. I’ve heard about that guy too. Had a buddy visit him for some engine work as well.
