Exclamation Trunk lock wanted 1966 Starfire

So. When I purchased my 66 Starfire, I knew there were no keys. The locksmith used the code on the door lock and handed me a new key. It took 5 feet of 3/8" drive extensions to reach the back of the trunk from the back seat but I got it to the smithy and the code was unusable. She said for $35-40 she could rebuild it. $25 if she could just rekey it. Someone had maybe rekeyed it already and it looked like someone had tried a screwdriver on it. No part stores have a recessed lock cylinder and NAPA even went to the paper catalogs. USA Parts Supply said even the one he has for 66 is surface mounted. RockAuto only has surface mounted ones. Short story long, does anyone have a recessed trunk lock, for this 1966 Pain in my ***? Also, if anyone knows where I might find the little flipper door cover thingy for said trunk lock that would be greatly appreciated as well.

I can't remember exactly what the 66 trunk lock cylinder looks like but try some of the specialty vendors- Fusick, or maybe some of the Cadillac and Buick vendors since those carlines also liked to hide the lock cylinder behind a cover. It's possible one from a junkyard 1966 Delta 88 might work as those have a wide diecast panel surrounding the lock cylinder but no cover.

The lock cover? Good luck with that. Better than half the 66 Starfires I've seen are missing that piece, and replacing the whole tailpanel is about the only solution. My first 66 that I bought way back in 1974 was missing that piece at only 8 years old, and took me a while to find a JY piece that had it. That's the trouble with Starfires... all that fancy trim.

Do you have a photo of the piece? I have a lot of 66 98 stuff and maybe it interchanges?

I will have to look and I do have an entire rear finish panel with the little door but would only sell as a unit.

I just checked and the lock mechanism/cylinder I have is reported to be from a 66 98. It is not slim enough to fit in the Sfire rear finish panel. I do not have a 66 Sfire trunk lock mechanism only the finish panel.

How much for the rear panel?

Glad you posted the picture as it is different than the one I have. So mine may NOT be from a 98, the one you picture may work!

Its not perfect but the part you need is pretty nice. I can get pictures. I paid 125 for it and would sell for the same plus ship costs.

Fusick says the TL66 lock cylinder they carry is for everything except Starfire and Toronado. So it's possible you're correct. As for the tail panel, that is half what I found on an ended Ebay piece. I am definitely interested but I can't expect you to hold it for me. If somebody hits you up for it after seeing this, do it. This is a budget build and would take some rat-holing of money to get it but I am far from actually needing it. It's not ready for paint and trim.

I will try and post a picture of the lock cylinder I have later. I dont think the finish panel is going anywhere soon. They are scarce but so are the people looking for them.
