And you probably won't, at least not as made specifically for this car.

I ran into the same problem with my '67 Delta 88. I found that the sending unit for a '72 Delta 88, which IS reproduced new, is a drop-in replacement.

You'll probably have to do a bit of research, perhaps take a chance and order something that looks like it will fit, before you finally solve the problem.

I checked just now at the rockauto.com website, and the fuel tank sending unit for a '72 Toronado is the same part number as that for a '72 Delta 88. I'll bet you a dozen donuts that if you ordered this part (Part number FG106A), it would fit in your car. It might be worth the $58 to find out, particularly since there shouldn't be a problem with returning it if it doesn't work.

The unit comes with two lines with one to be used for the vapor return. My car didn't have this as it doesn't have A/C, so I just capped it off.

Parts book shows 68-70 Toronado use grp 3.107 p/n 6427920.

Parts book also shows that 71-72 Toro and 70-72 B/C body use the same sending unit.

thanks for the info. i found this one on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/71-72-BELAIR-IMPALA-CAPRICE-CUSTOM-CRUISER-SENDING-UNIT-/120520016862?fits=Year:1972|Model:Toronado&hash=it em1c0f8d83de&item=120520016862&pt=Motors_Car_Truck _Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

and am going to take a look on rock auto too.

from research i found that all the openings in the tank are the same so i think either one of these will work even though the original is a canister type with the float mounted inside a tin can shape.

any thoughts?

It looks the same as the unit I bought, and I think it will fit just fine.

One comment though. He's asking $42 plus $20 to ship it, for a total of $62. Will he accept a return if it turns out not to fit?

The same unit is $59 at rockauto, and with shipping it will probably be about $70. That's not much more than the ebay unit, and I'm pretty sure rockauto WILL let you return it if doesn't fit.

The ebay seller is gouging you on shipping.

I checked just now, and rockauto shipping to my address is $8. That's only about $67 total for the rockauto unit versus $62 for the ebay unit. I'd go with rockauto.

By the way, don't rule out the possibility of buying this at your local auto parts store. They probably wouldn't have it in stock, but they can order it.

I checked the autozone website just now, and they show this part for $75.

That is more than rockauto, but you don't pay shipping, only sales tax. An advantage of buying locally is that you can take it right back if it doesn't fit.

You might also check other stores. O'Reilly has it for $1 less, for example.
