You have to keep the #5 main with the original block it came with, or both the block and cap set will be worthless.

Well, not quite

First off, nothing special about the #5 cap

secondly, the parts are machined as an assembly, so if you change caps for ANY reason, you must have the crank bore line honed or line bored to rectify it.

This is common practice even if your block still has the original caps.

seems to me that anyone buying these parts may not spend that kind of money at a machine shop?

I respectfully disagree sir. The dowel location is important. The #5 cap must stay with the block.

Notice that all custom aftermarket caps are only the front 4.

Maybe because it's unlikely to fail, and much more complex to machine. The doweling will be taken care of just like the other caps' fitment. I once put wrong caps on, the misaligment was very obvious. I had a mix-match of 3 engines. Learned that.

I have sold a few sets of orphan caps. I am sure the builder did what was necessary to make them all fit right. These are not backyard billy builders.
