1970 OAI Hood

SOLD 19 Jun 2018

Here are four pictures of a hood I bought 30 years ago; it was originally Sherwood Green with Black stripes. I intended to install it on my 442 or my Vista Cruiser.
Like most of these original hoods, owners hadn't been kind to it, but I made sure it had a professional, structural restoration. I didn't do any of the repair myself; I hired the best I knew to do the work. I didn't want to be faced with doing anything twice, especially after paint work. The following is a summary of work that I had done:
  • The fiberglass was repaired by grinding out cracks near the right-hand air intake. Resin and matting completed the repair.
  • Two cracks in the crumple-zone of the steel frame were welded (picture of this repair)
  • The steel frame was rebonded to the glass
  • A new threaded plate at a hinge attachment point was fabricated and welded into the frame to replace the one that ham-hands cross-threaded and broke the spot welds (picture of this repair)
The restoration was completed up to the final body-work. Match contour for the front hockey stick and hood-tooth trim was not done. And at that point, I changed direction on my projects and would now like to sell the hood.
Nothing has been done to the hood in the last five years and the surfaces are still as-repaired, indicating the repair work was done well.
$1800 for the hood picked up in the Minneapolis area.

Good price for an original oai that is ready for final fit and paint. I'm surprised that you don't want to keep it as a spare for the wagon. (Just in case!)

Code, the two parts were not separated. The original relationship between the parts was preserved. It was on my car for about three years when it was in storage. It fit normally, that is to say the corners popped and dropped the same as on the cars when they were born. The gaps with the fenders were normal (front to back and side to side).

Heath, it took years but my wife has convinced me that I don't need to keep the things that can be replaced with mere money. I only need to keep the rare items. Running low on storage space is a motivator as well.
