This reminds me of the guy who ran L.E.S. auto parts; he'd show up at the Carlisle, PA and E-Town, NJ swaps. Had a tent, a table, a card catalog. People would ask him if he had such-and-such part, and he'd put his spectacles on and check his card catalog, and after a few minutes he'd declare "sorry, I don't have that". I'd see that same thing play out every time I passed his vendor space. Even fell for it once myself.

Hit and miss queries with a vendor who doesn't provide an inventory list are fine and all, but I wouldn't get my hopes up and surely wouldn't hound the guy if he doesn't get back to you. Law of diminishing returns applies.
