Curiosity Question on Original Paint Process

What was the painting process, or flow, on cars built in the mid 60's? Were the pieces painted before assembly, or were the complete cars painted after assembly?
The reason I ask is that my 66 project will be ready for paint soon, but I will have to take it to someone to do it. It is going to be Black, and I would never even consider attempting that. The car is still disassembled, with all the body pieces in Epoxy Primer (both sides). Painting as it would mean trailering everything to the painter (after final blocking). Or, I could reassemble the car and take it to the painter. What guidance and suggestions do you have?

I don't know how the original process went (I highly suspect that at least the hood and fenders were painted separate from the car...don't know about the doors or trunk lid). But when I had my'68 painted, it was done by the painter with the fenders and hood off of the car. And, I did have to trailer it to the painters but I believe it was well worth it. I have the sense that the paint job was much more thorough and complete by having those parts painted separately. BTW, '66 is my most favorite year of them all!

The body shell was painted with the doors and trunk lid assembled. Hoods and fenders were painted seperatly and found there way together further down the line.

As mentioned already, the body with doors and deck were shot together in ac lacquer and run into the bulb oven at 340 degrees. The paint looked horrible before the oven. Many colors did not match the front assy. and body. Your painter should like the car all together but temporary, so he can remove parts easily to cut in.

Yup.


Saw it first hand at the Framingham plant in 1972.
