Rallye 350 Bumpers

I have nice chrome replacement bumpers for my Rallye 350. The body shop wants to grind off the chrome before painting. There must be a better way to prepare the bumpers for paint without damaging them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I would try to find good straight cores to have painted. Then keep the good chrome bumpers for possibly another project. Just a thought, cheers!

I have heard of some people bead blasting them. Roughshod the surface enough so paint adheres. Should cause less damage or and no grind/gouge marks vs. taking a grinder to them.

Other option is a chrome shop can reverse the charge and de-plate them down to original metal. But chrome shops are few and far between today.

Find a bumper plater and have the chrome chemically striped. Do not grind the chrome off, sounds like a hack shop that wants to try that.
If the bumper has nice chrome find a not so nice chrome one and sell the good bumper and make a little money.

We used silica sand to blast a set. It etched it enough that primer and paint stuck to it real well. Had good paint on it from 1999 till I sold it this year.
