Purists will hate it, but....
I am not a purist and my car being nothing "special" - except to me of course - I tried my hand at striping (yes STRIPING - not STRIPPING) this weekend. For my first ever stripe job I think it came out amazing.
I know it is not right for the car/hood, but I didn't really like the thin stripes that were put on this hood by Olds, so I went with the full stripe design. I have seen other cars with this hood painted this way, and really liked it so I thought that it would be worth trying these out before I repaint the car for real. I wasn't sure exactly how I would feel about them, and didn't want to spend thousands and then decide that I don't like them - so some tape, 4 hours of masking (Damn those curves at the front of the hood are a B***H to get right) and a quick spray job told me what I needed to know.
What do you all think? The guy who sprayed the stripes for me says I should do the inserts black - I kinda like the way they look now in chrome.

I like the pin striping; nice work.
I wonder how it would look if you had made the pin stripe go around the hood inserts, instead of stopping at them. Might have made them look more inclusive to the hood's design. Just my opinion, though.
And I also agree-- I thought this was going to be another thread on placing a Chevy engine in an Olds after I read the title!

Straight through the louvers instead. I like the idea of having them go around and will most likely do that when we repaint the whole car.

I think it looks just fine the way it is. Unless you show it, most people won't know the difference. Then again, even at most local one's etc. Most people won't know the difference.

I think it looks better than the W29 appearance package from 72. Filling in the stripe area like a W30 hood was brilliant! I'd leave the faux grills just the way they are. For a first time effort I think you did better than some shops around here.
I tend to like the 'pure' approach most of the time, but what you've done with your car enhances it's looks exponentially. Great work!

i can imagine the front was tedious. Does give you a "chevy" first impression when looking at it. But isnt the objective to be different than the car next to you. i think the black louvers would look better...jmo... Looks perfect to me...make it yours brother, you have to look at it all the time.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to add a very brief 2¢:
The hood is the one part of the car you, as the driver, see all the time, the whole time you are driving. Therefore, it is of prime importance that you paint the hood just the way you like it. If the rest of the car is a rusty, dented POS, but the hood is bright and shiny, with a sporty stripe, you'll feel like you're driving a brand-new Coupe deVille every single day .

The hood is a detail that one really doesn't get to appreciate anymore with the majority of most new cars ... they way they slope down in the front.
I miss the days where cars didn't seem to disappear just beyond the windshield wipers.

since you asked.
First off it is your car so the only opinion that matters is your's.
That said I dislike it. Adding OAI hood stripes on a non OAI hood looks wrong to my eye.
The 1972 factory stripe is a love it or hate it deal too.
I have often seen the optional single stripe up the middle from the 1971 442 used on 72 cars. To me that is a much better look. I had this stripe on my 1972 442 race car for many years.
