Question on the trunk (female) latch that is bolted to the floor. I have 1970 442 and Cutlass Sx from the Linden plant. I was at a judged car show the past weekend and one of the Judges mentioned that the trunk latch wasn't supposed to be painted, so he was to deduct a 1/2 a point. Both my cars have been repainted and both latches are painted. Is this correct or does it vary from plant to plant? Just trying to make sure i know what is right.

My 72's latch on the floor is painted. Not a 70 but just my input (if it helps).
Anyone else with a 70?

Mine is painted with the trunk paint, there is a tape line on the edge where it attaches to the trunk lip that has about a quarter inch stripe that is body color. It looks like the body color was sprayed first then masked off and the trunk was sprayed. I'll get a pic if you want, I'm 99.99% sure it is unmolested from the factory.

Here are pictures from my '69 4-4-2 convertible (Fremont car) and the trunk is original - never been touched - the exterior of the car has been re-painted. The trunk is currently "apart" as well - my '69 is a work in progress.

It appears to me that the latch was painted along with the trunk and with the trunk spatter paint. It's all a gray color with the little white streaks in it. I'm having trouble imagining that this feature would change a lot from year to year.

When I restored my '68, I did it along the same lines as the '69 trunk with regards to the latch (the '68 latch has trunk spatter paint on it as well). I didn't lose any points at the Nationals in Reno with regards to my trunk latch.

I have a sense that you run into this sort of "problem" every once in awhile with judging. I was told at the Nationals that there was a problem with the wire wheel covers on my '68 4-4-2 convertible - one of the judges thought that the only wheels/wheel covers available for '68 4-4-2s was the SSII or a steel wheel with the poverty hubcap. Fortunately, I have my original window sticker that shows the car came originally with wire wheel covers.

There will be other issues like this that will arise from time to time. I don't like it, especially when I know I'm right, but it's one of those things that we, as being judged, will just have to roll with the punches and wait until the issue(s) get ironed out at the top. Patience will win out in the end!

Here are some better pictures - taken today with natural light. Artificial light makes it hard to see but the natural light shows it right!

It's hard for me to imagine that the assembly plants would treat this part differently, and through the different years, unless there is a stark universal change (meaning all assembly plants changed a procedure for some bonafied reason) from one year to the next.

My sx was 4th week in august and my 442 was 1st week in september. Both cars came from Linden NJ plant

My 70sx conv was built in Linden I think. Vin 342670E...... I think E is Linden. Anyway, that latch on mine was same dark green as body and then partially covered by spatter paint. Not sure if the factory intentionally painted it green or it gets overspray when painting the body, but it was definitely well covered.

Here are a couple pictures of my '70 Cutlass S (Freemont plant). A little overspray on the latch, otherwise it's all trunk spatter. I'm not completely sure it's factory original - some collision repair was done on the car before my dad bought it used in 1974.
