Does anyone have a detail or know what manual would show the size and spacing of the W30 stripes for 70 442. I am new to this site and entered this in the wrong place earlier( newbie forum) Thanks.

they are in the assembly manual and the parts place inc. Has a template if you are interested.

Who offers this manual. Tameraz's reproduces an assembly manual. I contacted them and they said their manual did not have this information. Do you have another source??

The W30 stripe dimensions are indeed in the assembly manual. Now, we tried the templates, and the painter spent many,many hours trying to lineup the stripes from panel to panel. The hood template did work nice. So, if you use the templates plan on spending several hours putting them on.

Thanks - and yes the wildaboutcars.com site was my first stop for this info and I found a diagram with some dimensions in section 1-4.

For the benefit of my painter I'd like to get as much info as possible so if anyone else has any additional details I'll take em!

I'd recommend getting the stencil kit from the parts place. Its far from perfect but its a great start and the stripes are the correct width. You will have to tweak it around the wheel wells though. The hood kit is perfect. the trunk kit close.

Looks like they go upward at both ends. The stripe is also high where it crossed the doors. You can tell by the gap between the stripe and the emblem.

I have seen cars with narrow stripes down the side that follow the same line as the car above. Was this an option or just a add on by individuals?

The stripes will make or break the car's appearance.They will be time consuming,even if you start with a stencil.the most common mistake I see is that they slant upward at each end.The stripes should be parallel to the side marker lights,and right on the part of the body that starts to roll under.

Joe, thanks for the info. I will need to look harder because I have only been able to find the wider W 30 kits in the catalogs. You are right down the road from me! I'm in Fuquay. Love your car. A friend of mine bought one brand new just like it back in the day. He put 100k mi on it in less than 2 years. I heard the other day he still has it but it is more rust than metal!

as much as the stencils cost and maybe not perfect, is it better to start with them or just do it yourself without them? How hard would it be without the stencils?

It's really not hard at all without the stencils. I have laid out the stripes on a few cars. I do have a copy of the factory blueprints, similar to what is in the assembly manual but larger.

Your local auto paint dealer will have a selection of fine line masking tape, just get the various sizes as shown on the layout drawings and take your time. I think the longest it took me was about 5 hours a side, had to make sure they were right.

If you want to discuss how I did them, I'd be happy to.

My paint guy was here Saturday. He said he definitely did not want the stencils but wanted the best pictures and info i could get. I was wondering if there was something better than the assembly manual. I am not ready for them but would love to see about copies of the blueprints. can/will you sell copies?

I am pretty sure those large diagrams are on wildaboutcars. I also have a 8x10 somewhere that has the dimensions from an original car from way back when. Must have been the late 70s or 80s.

Exactly!! The stencil kit helps get things going quickly and the best thing is they are very accurate with the hieghts of the stripes and spaces. I think that's what ruins the stripes the easiest is bad height and spacing. Though you need to know where to end them and start them as well

here are some pics of my stripes, note how the side stripes do not go all the way to the ends of the car. Also the line they follow at the fender - same angle as the side marker light.

I did all my stripes "free hand". I just looked at pictures of other cars and looked for spots to work off of. I noticed the stripes go parallel to the side markers and sit right around the "roll" of the body line from the front to the rear between the wheel wells. A good indicator is the measurement below the fender emblems. Then stand back from the front and back and eye it up to see if it's straight or if it curves.

That is interesting. you painted the white and then taped the stripes. I like that idea.

It's a lot easier to tape a thin stripe instead of the entire car. I should also mention I got that idea from someone here........not sure who?

I also used 2" tape for the big stripe and 3/16" trimline tape for the small stripe. I also used the small trimline tape to determine the gap between the big stripe and the small stripe. And over the wheel wells I used 3/4" tape

Joe, what is the color of the inside of your scoops, there is another thread wondering about that. I have only seen black or what I assumed incorrectly painted body color. A couple of folks mentioned it is non-painted fiberglass white.

here is a doc I got 15 years ago. Not sure how old it is and where it came from (maybe supercars?) but it was measurements taken off a survivor with original stripes

here is a nice detail of the stripes around the wheel-well, this is where I see many folks screw up making them squared-off. I hope those who gave me these don't mind as I can't remember where they came from.

The scoops are painted black and they are at angle that appears where it was taped off.

And those stripes are original in your pics!

Folks,

Just bought an SX convertible, half dressed as a 442, figured I might get the stripes to complete it. It has the ram air hood and 442 emblems already.

How much would you expect to pay to have this done at a shop?

Would you consider removing the 442 ID? SX convertibles are rare enough as it is.

If I had an original hood, I would.

But I guess once you paint stripes, there is no going back.

My paint guy doesn't like to use stencils (said they tend to leave a glue of sorts behind that is hard to get off without damaging the freshly painted stripe (non Olds I believe); maybe a cheap stencil?) Any issues like this from the stencils avail. out there for the W25 hood? He is good with dimensions and did my Father's 70 Pace Car. Don't know if I should buy the stencil or not and I guess I will scour Wildaboutcars to see how detailed the measurements are..
