The Parts Place sells a nice spatter paint, I have used it many times works great, However it is spray gun only, comes in quarts, no clear coat required
Are you planning on refinishing the trunk of your Olds? Have you considered DIY truck bedliner kits? I suppose this wouldn't have the same texture but it would definitely be durable.
I’m looking to splatter paint my 68 442 trunk. I’m not really sure what it should look like on a 68. Is it like this trunk photo that I got from an older thread about trunk splatter? Here is a grey splatter that I have a can of. Is that too gray? —Billy
rattle can paint is water based. any moisture in trunk will take paint off. parts place has oil based splatter in quart cans that works the best. did my trunk, looks like original. requires cheap spray gun with 2.5 tip. can buy cheap from harbor freight, worth the buy, do it once be done
The secret is that TPPI trunk paint is just a quart of Zolatone. This paint is very hard and not affected by moisture. Has been used for years to paint inside of buses and yes, the original paint for most USA vehicle trunks. Last I checked the aqua and black was no longer available, but onyx will look great and might be correct for Olds. I'm more of a Chevy guy so don't know off hand what color was used in Olds.
Troy - Check into the 2 or 3 spray can system made and sold by Thornton Restorations....appears to be oil based and easy to apply since no spray gun setup needed.

I used the Guru Colors 4 can system from Thorton on the trunk of my 68 442 convertible . It includes 3 cans of dark gray base and a can of aqua or light gray spatter. I like the durability of the finished product compared to the traditional water based systems, but have to mention that the spatter was very difficult to apply evenly. The nozzle orifice is way too large which resulted in poor atomization. So I now have big blotches of aqua instead of evenly distributed spatter. I tried increasing the application distance with no luck. I use a trunk mat, so the only visible areas are the wheel wells and quarter inners.

This is very interesting stuff for correct restorations. How could "aqua and black" not be available??
Certainly my long since crashed 1978-1981 Camaro had that aqua to pale black and blue stuff in the trunk?
If my Olds isn't pale blue, it still has the same look and feel.
I wonder if any of these color codes are correct or otherwise close to original?
I've got some light rust after 4 years street driving and throwing all kinds of stuff in the trunk so I will report back if I resort to painting.
I've shot some things like mattifying agents and primer filler through my HVLP spray gun and it's pretty clear to me that rear inner fender areas in the trunk could not be restored without the flexibility of a canned product or a total restoration.
