Should I attempt priming and painting myself?
Hello everyone. When I get my 72 supreme back from the body shop it will have the rear quarters and sail panels etc welded In and primed. Am I silly for considering priming and painting the car myself not having done this before? I have a 15 gallon compressor. What would I need to do this job and is it worth the money I would save? I would most likely be painting white. I would also have to remove the remnants of the vinyl top which I would then like to paint a second color (dark green) instead of a new top. Any suggestions? Should I go jump in a lake?
Thanks.
Chris.
Thanks.

Yes.
My suggestion: Buy a HVLP setup, including a decent gun and a proper mask (modern 2-part paints are toxic), buy your paint and solvents from a reputable local dealer, experiment on some scrap material, and just do it.
It won't be perfect, but you'll save a LOT of money, and you will learn something.

Your compressor may not be enough. It is the CFM that matters the most, and then the gallons of capacity. Check out http://www.autobody101.com/forums/
Depends on the result you desire. If you want a twenty foot driver or a full show car.
White is easiest color IMO. (also cheapest). You also have to decide if you want single stage or basecoat/clearcoat.
Research, research, research before deciding.
