I saw this inside the ‘73 350 quadrajet I am taking apart. Is this an odd thing? The other carbs I took apart didn’t look like this. I though at first that it was cracked but I now think that it was put there on purpose.
I am far from any Q-Jet expert (although I've rebuilt several) and I know that area is called the booster rings. The only reason I'm responding is because I read in Ruggles' Q-Jet book about modifying booster rings and it was then I did a tiny bit of research on why someone would modify booster rings. So, I just looked in Ruggles' book, he talks about modifying the booster rings but I don't see anything resembling your picture.
I did have a look (Google Search) and Ruggles talks about...in 1971 Pontiac used a special version of the Quadrajet lacking the outer booster rings... They were a special casting and lasted one year.

I looked up that Pontiac one you are referring to. That one looks way different. I wish I did have one though because apparently they’re worth lots of money.

My guess is that somebody ruthlessly jammed a screwdriver into it to hold the choke plate open because it was flooded or wouldn't start. That broke the piece off.
