Gas tanks

It's been a while since I bought one and I know there is a quality issue with them as to where you buy them from. I can't remember if you are supposed to get them from Canada or Mexico?

I'm thinking Canada.
Any Ideas?

I have a Canadian-sourced Spectra tank in my '69 4-4-2 and have been very happy with it. My recollection is that they do A- bodies only, though -- if you have a big car you might have to look elsewhere.

Just bought a Spectra, I'll let you know how it works as I'm putting it in this week (hopefully)

Not true. I bought a Spectra Premium GM40U for my '78 Toronado through Amazon.

The OP should be more concerned about WHERE he buys his new tank as opposed to who makes it. There may not be more than one manufacturer, but I don't know that for sure for his model. In any event, as far as my car was concerned, O'Reilly, Autozone, NAPA, Rockauto, and Amazon all sell the same exact tank, Spectra Premium GM40U. Here are their respective prices:

O'Reilly: $299.99
Autozone: $284.99
NAPA: $306.09
Rockauto: $180.99
Amazon: $178.00

Needless to say, it pays to shop around. NAPA's price is 72% higher than Amazon or Rockauto. Also consider shipping versus sales tax. I'm an Amazon Prime member, so shipping of this tank was $0. No sales tax, either. So I paid exactly $178.00. Plus, because I'm Amazon prime, shipping was two days. Order it Wednesday, get it Friday.

Rockauto is about the same price, but they charge about $40 to $50 in shipping for something this large. The other three are local stores, so no shipping charge, but I would have to pay sales tax. But the point is moot because the cheapest of them is more than $100 more than Amazon or Rockauto.

While you're at it, if you're putting in a new tank, you might as well replace the sending unit at the same time, and it pays to shop around for that as well.

Again all five vendors sell the same (and probably only one available) model, Spectra Premium FG110B. The prices:

O'Reilly: $90.99
Autozone: $50.99
NAPA: $85.99
Rockauto: $51.79
Amazon: $59.51

Anyone who buys from O'Reilly or NAPA without shopping around first probably owns stock in one of them. Otherwise, there's no reason to. In my case, even though Rockauto was about $8.00 less, their shipping charge of about $10 made it a wash as far as price was concerned. As far as Autozone, $50.99 was the cheapest, but add sales tax of 7%, and the prices is about $55.00. I would have to have Autozone order it, so it would take a day or two to come in. Amazon has that two-day shipping which Rockauto does not and which equals Autozone shipping time, and since they deliver right to my home, guess who I bought it from? But Autozone would have been a reasonable place to buy it as well. Even Rockauto is fine if you don't mind waiting a week for it. But certainly not the other two.

Do a little research at the various sites and find the exact tank for your car.

Rockauto shows Spectra Premium GM37H as fitting a '67 GTO. Their price is $129.79 plus shipping.

NAPA sells this same tank for $242.99.

Autozone sells it for $222.99.

O'Reilly sells it for $192.99.

Amazon shows that same tank for $182.70. Amazon also shows a second tank, Diften 197-A0906-X01 (never heard of that company), for $155.61. The Amazon listing doesn't say where the tank is made, and a google search for the company turns up a home page that looks pretty good but doesn't give much information.

http://www.diften.com/

Says they're a "wholesale distributor for automotive parts and accessories." My guess is that they don't make any parts, they just resell things made elsewhere and put their own brand on them, such as this tank, depending on the situation.

Based on the above, I'd buy the spectra premium from Rockauto. I don't know where you live, and where you live affects shipping costs. To my zip code, shipping is $35.99, which makes the total price of the Rockauto tank $167.58, which is cheaper than anyone else. Got your credit card handy?

The tank fit perfect, nice to have a gas gauge that works again too.

Stephen did the spectra tank look exactly like the one that came in your car the OEM? Or was there minor differences?
