MOTOR MOUNT1978 oldsmobile omega 350 rocket

I have looked for information on the inter web about the problem I am having, I will be putting in a 350 rocket and am looking for mounts, many of the "pros" are quick to say CHEVY AND OLDS DONT INTERCHANGE, well I looked up mounts for my car with my motor, and it comes up the chevy ones that I have, and It shows that they are used for both olds and chevy, I understand that other olds don't interchange, but these seem to. Any input? Also if anyone can send me a message to talk 1978 omegas I would like to hear some information. And how do I mount the motor!!!!!

So getting this straight
What all will I need to mount the motor, I bought the car and was given a truck and a half of stuff and found an olds mount piece... And the car had what I thought were chevy mounts. This situation has thrown me a bit from what I've been told.

Idk about your 78 but my 79 had all the wholes drilled in the frame for all kinds of mounts from factory it actually schocked me but what he did was get mounts and basically drop the engine in and locate his holes and put the mounts in do you have Facebook or text

Unfortunately I have neither, but With the mounts on it I can see a bunch of holes (weird) do you know where I can get a look at a good mounting kit or picture so I can see what I need to mount it and where.

Hm, my motor has and calls for these ones here in my picture. Sorry that's the best picture I have at the moment. But I wonder why the 1978 omega has such odd ball things.

Odd he used a 350 to line up his mounts for engine and tranny so I have his engine mounts so I have no concern I believe he got those off a 71 cutlass or it was an 85 cutlass either way he got the matching stuff and it worked for his 403 so I'm not questioning it lol

Well it looks like I'm going to just have to give it a shot when I throw it in, if not I will have to come back to ask the people of the forum.

You know why it comes with Chevy mounts and Olds mounts? Easy answer. In 1978 Olds ran out of Rocket engines and started using Chevy power in some of their lineup. I can tell you that first hand. My 78 Calais was built with a Chevy 305 4bbl in it from the factory. There was a larger offering of Chev engines for Olds cars in 78 than Olds engines. And there was also a Pontiac 6 that was offered. Go figure - that's the answer to your question. Here's the power team supplement page from the 78 Olds Brochure

I appreciate the picture, I never even thought about that, I know a guy with an omega that has a 350 chev, but the mounts online say they work with olds motors and chev motors. Can I still do that?

Olds and Chevy had different mounts for their engines. I don't think it's possible to do what you're asking. Basically if the car has an Olds engine - it will need the Anchor 2261 engine mounts for the Rocket 330, 350, 403 or 455. If your friends car has chev 350? No the chev mounts will not work with the Olds engines. Sounds confusing but it's not. Basically Chev and Olds have different motor mounts.

I completely understand, I have one of those mounts, but does the anchor 2261 not go over the one mounted to the frame and a bolt goes through them both? I just don't see how it bolts to the motor and frame.

I don't know what 350 you looked up the mounts for, but there was no Oldmobile-sourced motor offered in the 1978 Omega. The mounts you have are the "clamshell" style Chevy mounts used on all Chevy motors since about the mid-1970s. They look like this:

The rubber clamshell mounts bolt to the frame and use an all metal bracket that bolts to the block. The Chevy metal block bracket will not bolt to an Olds motor since the motor mount bolt holes are in different places.

Your two options are to either get the metal block brackets from 1977-79 Firebird or Trans Am with the Olds 350 or 403, which also used the clamshell frame mounts, or to get the frame mounts and matching 2328 motor mounts for a 260 Olds-powered 1975-77 Omega.

The Trans Am brackets look like this:

Be aware that the mount in this photo is upside down:

Rockauto.com

You can link on the front page of this site. Just look up 1978 Olds Omega with any kind of Olds V8 in it, click on motor mounts, add to cart, enter credit card info, done!

OK, YOU go to any auto parts website and find me a motor mount for a 1978 Omega with an Olds motor. We'll wait.

Now go back an read my post above. The only engine options in the 78 Omega were the Buick V6 or Chevy V8s.

To the O.P., you also go back and read my last post. Then decide which way you want to go, clamshell mounts with Trans Am brackets or 75-77 Omega frame mounts with matching Anchor 2328 motor mounts. Either way will work. In both cases, the rubber mounts are available at any auto parts store, Anchor 2328 for the Olds mounts and Anchor 2292 for the clamshell mounts (which are what you already have). You won't find new versions of the metal brackets, so start searching for good used. Hint: If you enter 403 trans am motor mounts into an ebay search window, you'll eventually find some of those. The Omega 260 brackets will be much harder to find.

I appreciate the insight, now I must search for the trans am mounts. But while I am building my olds 350 I will have a chevy 305 in it, could you give me the number for the photo you posted before of the three bolt chevy mount.

What do you plan to do with those? The 2142s WON'T mate a Chevy motor to the clamshell frame mounts you currently have. You'd need to replace the clamshell mounts with the frame brackets from an SBC Nova or Camaro to use the 2142s, which look like this:

These look like the ones for the Olds mounts, but they are not the same.

To mate an SBC to your current 2292 clamshell mounts, you need the metal engine-side brackets that look like this:

Fortunately, since they are Chevy parts, everyone sells repros.
