How many made-81 Sport Omega?

It's been a while since I've given an update. I've gotten a little more work done on it. Although I've been pretty busy getting the Charger ready for paint the past several weeks. I'm off this week and I should be getting the Charger from the body shop tomorrow or Thursday, then I have to get it back home and put it back together. I have done some on the Omega. As you know it was from a unkyard and in tough shape. The roof had been walked on so it had a lot of kinks to work out. I've gotten that worked out, believe me it took many hours of using the body hammers and dollies to get it worked back into shape. It will only need a few ounces of filler in some very small spots along the edges where the kinks were. It's really amazing as you work the kinks out and get the metal worked back to its original shape that the big dip in the middle of the roof finally popped out on its own. It's definitely an art to get it back into almost perfect shape so you don't have to use filler or very little. I also welded shut the trim holes in the replacement hood too. But I'll show you a couple pics of the Charger I took earlier at the shop Tuesday.

I've gotten some work done last month while I was on vacation. As mentioned earlier it had the Iron duke/automatic when I bought it. Well it's supposed to have the 2.8, they must've blew it up and just started to swap in something they had on hand is all I can figure. Anyway, once again it has a 60 degree V6. It's a 3400 that has had the pistons/top end swapped out for a carbureted setup. So I'll call it a 3.4HO. It sure fits a lot nicer with the serpentine drive/offset waterpump on the front of the motor. Using the 4speed also frees up some room too. You also see the rusted battery tray I had to cut out. I still need to get a set of pushrods made as they never had an iron head/roller lifter motor. They're only about $60 for the set. It's getting there.
The 3400 in the N's can be a pretty kick *** motor. I know for a fact that the 3400 can be built up and faster than 3800. A lot of people think that the 3800 is just so much better but it's not.
I was just going though my parts. My 3400 will have a cam that has .506/.506 lift with the 1.6 rockers and I just found out that the 3.4 DOHC pistons will fit in the 3400's block and since they are domed .040 they will increase the CR. Of course you'll need a thicker HG because the pistions on the 3400 stick out of the block .020 already. I have a guy wanting to sell me his 3.4 DOHC pistions and .075 Cometic HG which put together would bump the CR to 12.4:1
I also have the the pushrods for that cam, as well as SBC connecting rods. My heads have 3500 valves, LS6 springs, have a 3 angle valve job and are milled .020 along with P&P intake manifolds. I also will be putting on a 94-99 double roller timing set that I might get cryo-treated
You can do all this to a 3800 block, but the 3400 is better hands down

The 3400 stock cam with it's original 1.6 ratio rockers has .436 lift as opposed to the old 2.8 V6 cam was only around .380 lift. So with the added cubic inches, alittle higher compression ratio, and a bigger cam that of course has a roller profile this thing should move out alright.

I'mgetting there on the floor. The passenger section needs a little more trimming and then I'll tack it in and seal it. The drivers side is bad both front and back seat area. Even the seat bracket/crossmember is bad.

I went to a yard 2 weeks ago to get a dash and the rear bumper fillers from an Omega when I noticed they had and AWD Pont. 6000SE. Well, the wheels in my head are turning. I am considering doing the AWD swap but I need to consult with some fellow fabricators about mating the transfer case to the manual transmission. If I'm gonna do it I'm sure not sticking the 3 spd auto back in the car, yuck. I know it's not an easy swap as the floor will need to be modified(sucks that I'm in the middle of fixing it and half done).

Well, guess it's been a while since I updated things here. Anyway, I FINALLY finished the floorpan. The car has been sitting on the lift since Dec. 25th, 2011. Been working on it all week since I was off. Of course some plans have changed. I am going to do the All Wheel Drive, but the whole drivetrain thing is going in a new direction. I was going to go lo-tech/low budget but after seeing a guy on LS1tech doing a Fiero with an 06 Impala 5.3V8/6 speed manual setup I have decided to go that route. Interesting thig is that the F40 6 speed manual was also offered in the AWD Saab 9-3 so the transfer case from what I have seen will bolt up to the Pont. G6's F40 as well. I can't wait. I have gotten a ton of work done on the car this week. The floor, some really nice carpet from a Ciera it cleaned up so well. I had seats from an Achieva I had taken a while back because the rear seat measured the exact same width as the Omega seat. It had rust around the windshield so I cut that out & repaired that as well. Dyed the replacement dash and other interior parts. So now I'm ready to install the dash and the new windshield. Gonna have someone come to install that, I don't feel comfortable trying to save a few bucks it's one of those items I'd rather let a pro do it. Nothing would suck more than not getting it sealed up and having to redo a thing like that.

I remember having one of those cars at the dealership----it ended up as a $500.00 BONUS commission on TOP of whatever the normal commission was (25% of profit).
Let's just say that EVERY customer I had SAW that car!!! $500.00 Bonus was pretty stiff in 1981---here's another one that is worse---please don't think I'm hijacking this thread but, times WERE different then, I was an Oldsmobile salesman (doing pretty good) and bought my first house at 18% interest!!!

I picked up the Saab transfer case last week. Although it looks like I will need to either grab a Saab 6 speed for parts to grab the differential or pony up for a limited slip differential(about $1100) that has the extra splines on it to hook up the transfer case input shaft.

Wow, going on 5 years since I updated anything on this project. To be honest I've spent the last 4 working on the wifes 78 Y88 Solar gold edition 4 speed Trans am.
So now that I'm back on it I've made some progress this spring. I have an album started on Facebook so if you want to see how it's coming along just message me for info instead of reposting pictures again and again. The direction of this car is now 5.3LS4 from an 06-08 Impala SS, F40 6 speed manual, and the transfer unit and electronic locking limited slip rear differential from an 09 Saab 9-3 xwd. So it'll be 5.3 ls4, 6 speed manual, and AWD.

In case you're wondering those are 14" polycast wheels from an Achieva. I also found the build sheet on the top of the gas tank last week.
And that's the wifes Solar gold edition Trans am I've been working on.

Yeah, as time goes on other ideas come to mind. I almost gave up and had it for sale a couple years ago. The ad even found it's way onto a couple of web pages about it's rarity and that I was asking a pretty cheap price. The biggest thing was it's basically considered the holy grail of the fwd gm X bodies.

Just noticed this thread, cool work on the Omega. I've never seen a "Sport" one like that.
Dad had one back in the '80s (an '81 I think, 4-door grey w/ dark red interior, 2.5L Iron Duke IIRC). I had moved off to college by then, but my younger twin sisters hated it. It died in the middle of a bridge in GA on his way to FL one year. After getting towed to a local dealer for repair, he traded it on the spot for a newer ('85?) Cutlass Ciera (burgundy 4-dr, 4-cyl). He later traded that for an '88 Olds Delta 88 (tan 4-dr w/ the 3800 V6). He used to brag about getting 32+ MPG on the highway w/ that 88.
I had two friends w/ late '80s / early '90s Cutlass Calais w/ the Quad 4. Both were 2-dr, one was a 4-speed (maybe 5-speed?) that was pretty quick. The other was an AT. I raced the AT w/ my stock '68 Cutlass back in the day, we were nose-to-nose up to about 70 MPH when we backed off. Whoever got the jump basically won. I was pretty impressed w/ the Quad 4s. Good memories.
