I was wondering if a dodge 440 engine will fit in my 84 cutlass Calais.

I guess it would depend on how much junk you have in the trunk or your back seat.

Man, this one has never come up on here before. When you can bolt an Olds 455 in, I can't imagine any reason for even attempting a swap like this.

I'm sure it could be done, probably have to modify the oil pan and pump pickup for an aft located sump. Back in '94 when I was at Minot AFB, one of my friends removed a tired overhead cam 6 cylinder with 4 speed manual from his '68 Firebird for a 440/727. The haters will hate, but I can say first hand that the car was a rocket on the cheap. (No pun intended). After he separated from the service, he later sold the "bird" and dropped the power plant combo into a '72 Javelin. Personally I lean more on the conservative purist side, but I can say that his cars had the fun factor pegged.

I'm really just checking my options I want to upgrade my 6 cylinder and have a dodge 440 that works great and not being used. So just testing the waters on it just being possible to do

Thanks for the info. I want to upgrade my 6 cylinder and have a dodge 440 laying around so figured it wouldn't hurt to ask before I paid for something else.

I would think a torch, welder, and some creativity would work.

Several points:
1. pickup trucks with 383, 400, 440 engines used a rear sump oil pan
2. 440s are very heavy with their full skirt blocks, etc. perhaps 100 lb. more than a 455.
3. motor mount positions are too far forward for easy use in A bodies

i have several gbodys, a 03 marauder and a 70 GS Stage 1 and none of them are as fun to drive as my dads 69 1/2 road runner 440 6 barrel. 440s are slept on because everyone bows down to the hemi..hemis were mostly duds on the streets, the 440s cleaned their clocks. i can tell you this first hand, that road runner walked all over my Stage 1. we both took turns in both cars and got the same result. my GS isnt bone stock either but his RR is.

as far as putting it in a 84 calais.. it would take some work. i wanted to do that same swap in my monte SS to upset the apple cart amoung chevy guys but i decided to go with a rocket 350 i already had. I know they may an adapter to mate the 440 to a 700r4. past that i dont know anything about doing this swap.
