289 ford timing

a friend brought her 67 mustang over so I could give her a toon-up. Checked the timing and it was set to 8*. Her aftermarket ac is a big drag on the motor and would cause it to stall out and die. I advanced the timing to 12* adjusted the idle and got rid of the stall. I don't hear any detonation or have any experience with ford stuff. the dist looks to be original and has a ported vac advance that works.

Would 12* timing be too much?

Probably not, but you need to know total mechanical advance without the vacuum advance connected.
