sputter in motor

Hey guys im trying to help my brother out with a motor problem and i know you guys are a good place to get some help. He recently put a crate 383 motor in his car and is having a problem with it sputtering when he puts it to the floor taking off. It does not sputter when he takes off slow. Has already switched carbs twice and ruled that out. Any ideas on what might be the problem?

Check the timing...sounds like it might be advancing too much too soon.

The temptation is there to say it's because there's a Chevy lump in it, but, need more info. Ignition system and specs, type of carb, how many miles, where did he get it. Lot of variables can cause a bog and sputter.

Does his engine have the Edelbrock 750 carburetor on it? If it does, that is one of the most forgiving carbs on the market...I can't see it being that.

Does it have the HEI as well?

I'll stick with my initial thought that it is a timing problem...what is the timing set at?

I think you have the answer right there:

It's his brother's car, he never said it was an Oldsmobile. Anyway, did he ever check the timing? I would start there...it's an easy check and will give you instant results. If it's good, then move on to something more involved.

B-Mann, you gave us the link but you never answered about the carburetor. Does he have the 750 Edelbrock on his or not? We are asking these questions for a reason, it would behoove you to give us as much information as possible. If you need ideas you can check out the newbie forum for tips on how to help us help you with troubleshooting.

The picture looks like an Eddy for sure. Jack up the accel pump to the notch nearest the carb which will cause it to come in sooner and give a bigger shot. It sounds like it needs more gas. What was the stall on the converter? Too much stall when not needed can feel very sluggish too. Typically they are very slow in backing up with a high stall converter. You have to get the rpm's way up to move in rev.. Did that engine come broken in and dyno tuned?
