Start of a new project...

Hello to everyone. I've been into cars for years and had numerous projects and builds.. some more successful than others. I recently picked a 1972 Cutlass up. I have watched this car sit for years. I even remember the rusted qtr panels before the previous owner replaced them with these panels. Unfortunately He fell upon and some rough times and never got to finish or complete the paint and bodywork portion of the project.

So upon leaving church a few Sundays ago I did my usual slow ride pass and what do You know.... A for sale sign was in the window.. Needless to say I called the contact number over 50 times and finally got him on the phone and brought her home about a week ago. Not pretty but a lot of my projects start out rough.. Mainly because of My fun budget I guess...

I plan on doing 5.3 or 6.0 not too sure on whether I'm going with a th400 or a 4l80e yet..

Also in the air about whether to do carb or just leave the setup EFI

This will be my third LS swap but each time I learn something new..
Complete budget drivetrain wise is hopefully to remain under 2k.. I've seen it done but it was well planned out

That's a pretty skinny budget for an LS setup including engine, trans, wiring and computers/programming.

That sounds like one of them deals that are just supposed to come true.

Drive by for years, finally a for sale sign, hard to contact. That is the car guy motive/mantra. Always keep diggin.

If you've done the LS swap before, this should be a cake walk.

I'll be looking for updates, good luck with your fun budget.

First official mod was removing those seat beads... Also really wanted to see the seats looked like underneath the tape and junk that had probably been covering them for the last 20 years

After tape removal and a little vacuum action..

I see a lot of guys are swapping New style GTO seats into A bodies.. Before I go that route I may just try buying a set of repro. covers and installing them.. That should be interesting

Also took some time to get under the car and wash a bit.. Hoping the trunk floor is all that needs replacing

One of the biggest issues I see with the the A body LS swaps the the oil pan clearance.. If I have to pay 400 bucks for a oil pan it's definitely going to hurt the budget plans

A more recent pic. That blue tape is my temporary weather seal.. I think the windsheield is leaking water onto the floor pans but I'm not sure yet.

LS=dark side looks like a fairly easy build, wish you would keep Olds power though..

Previous owner was asking $1500 firm. Upon inspection I discovered a decent sized hole in the truck floor. So we agreed on $1200. I have been wanting a early 70s Cutlass for a while so I would have probably paid the entire asking price if He decided he didn't want to wiggle a bit. He was a fair guy tho. Speaking of buying these...

I have owned a
-73 Cutlass supreme w/455

-76 Cutlass sedan

-86 Cutlass that I had for a bit but never ended up buying

The 76 was by far the cleanest but the 73 with the 455 was the coolest. looks wise I like the 72 the best

Car needs a lot of TLC but I guess that's what this hobby is all about.

A 72 with an LS....sounds familiar.
I guess if it's on a budget, the choice of trans would depend on your ear gear ratio.
As for oil pans, the CTS-V fits well with 1" setback plates. It does hang down 3/4", so not a good choice for lowered cars.
