how to check the function of the autronic eye in my '53 -98
I am still working on my 98 - but I hope to get most things done this year : O
So I also want to test if the eye is working as it should
Seems to me as someone has repaired it not too long ago ..... I bought that 98 and have been restoring brakes, brake lines, some welding and so on the last months
Anyone here that can tell me how to check it at the parking car ?

there are two switches on the floor A and B
as far as I understand one is for manual Hi-Lo one is for Auto position of the eye
which is is for manual and which for Auto ? Is there any lamp that shows if Auto is on ?
has engine to run or should it work with battery also ?
is really no driving necessary for let it switch automatically ?

The lights in my garage will make mine dim. I flashlight will do the same. The engine does not have to be running. The small switch is an override to flash your lights if an oncoming car fails to dim their lights.

is anyone able to show pictures from inside the autronic eye ?
It would be great for me to see what is inside - how I could open mine if it is necessary and which parts are inside that "see" the light and switch off mine

My mother had a '55 "98 " when I was young, that had the autotronic eye . On one occasion I was riding with her on a stretch of road that was similar to a roller coaster(very hilly and curvey ) ! It was a very bright moonlight night, and when we would top a hill , the lights kept brightening when the moon would shine into the autotronic eye . They were very sensitive to light, but a neat accessory. Larry

On pages 33 & 34 of the 1955 Oldsmobile owner manual there is a description of the function of the Autronic-eye. It describes everything that is needed to know how to correctly operate it.

I have never opened mine up. The guy I bought it from converted it to solid state so it has none of the vacuum tubes in it. Although it works well, living in a major metropolitan area I rarely use it. It is mostly a novel addition to the car and occasionally somebody at a car show will ask what it is.

I am a technician and would love to see what is inside and how it works, just to understand what they built in '53 and how the system works.
For example I did not know that there are vacuum tubes connected to the autronic eye, or did I understand that wrong ?
