1956 Autronic eye info
I got a complete but used autronic eye at Hershey for my dads Christmas present. Depending on how difficult it is to install, he may love it or hate it! What I can't find is a template for mounting the phototube. Where do we drill in the dash and how many holes? I figure 2 holes but dont want to screw it up as its a nice padded dash. Thanks

I would do two things before I drilled into the padded dash. If it is used, there is a good chance it is not going to work. There is a guy I got the one on the 54 from that rebuilds these things and converts them to solid state so they work. I would have to go up in the attic to see if I still have the box it came in. If I do, it will have the template in it. Bad news I had foot surgery yesterday and won't be able to get up in the attic for a few weeks. Sorry about that. The other thing is be sure you Dad likes it. If he doesn't, he is probably not going to let you drill in his dash. You will need a 90 degree drill to drill the dash. The windshield was our when we put the one in the 54. One other caution. Be sure the one you have is for a 56 Olds. The Cadillac units were different and a lot of people don't know the difference.

How many bolt holes are there in the bottom of the post that holds the unit? That should tell you how many holes are needed.
As to the "where" to drill, best bet it to find a car that has one installed from the factory, and take precise measurements. They were quite common on Cadillacs from about 1953 - 1957.
