I need to replace the tires on my 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible with SSII 14x7 rims. I want something sporty, yet classic-looking.

i) Which tires do you recommend?
ii) Which sizes look best? (I'm replacing Goodyear Eagle STs, 225/70/R14)
iii) Should I get larger tires on the back?

I have the same car as you. I like the look of the super stock wheels also, but the 14" are getting harder to find. I switched to 15" many years ago when the 15" were all over the place and cheap. I know you can still get BFG Radial T/A's in 14"s. I recommend using the same size all around but some like the look of bigger in rear. I had different sizes on my Cutlass and then couldn't rotate them and the fronts wore out a lot sooner. Now I have 245/70-15's and like them. Welcome to the site..

Like Greg, I have identical car as yours. I had Eagle STs like you did and kept that size when I changed to my current BF Goodrich Radial T/A 225/70R14. I liked the way both sets looked on the car and would not change. Welcome to site. Glad to have another 71 convertible owner on board.

Just replace your Goodyears with BF Goodrich Radial TAs (white letter out of course). I would get the same size in front and back, that way you can rotate them properly.

If you are stuck with the 14" wheels, you don't have a lot of choices any more. 225/70-14 is the closest to OEM diameter you will find and fills the wheelwells nicely. There are wider 14" tires, but they are much smaller in diameter. The 245/60-16 BFGs, for example, are the widest you get reasonably get but are an inch smaller in diameter than the 225/70-14s. They just look funny on A-body cars with so much daylight between the tire and the wheel opening.

I have BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on my 14x7 rims. Definitely good tires with that classic look.

I just put on Cooper Cobra 225/70/14.. couldn't be happier with the look

My 68 is all original, and has 215X75 14 white side walls with full wheel covers. I'm thinking about changing sizes, but I like the original look and the white walls. That locks me into the 14" rims, so I'm wondering what tire size I can go up to, and I haven't found any white wall tires at any size.

Tire Rack didn't have any white walls that I could find.

Anybody have any ideas?

Summit shows a Hankook 225/70/14 whitewall for $108 & it was mentioned above or in another tire thread that Discount Tire carries this tire also. Can anyone confirm that this is indeed a whitewall? How wide?

IMO ..... 4 of these would look great on a stock a-body with wheel covers.

Best solution is to set the 14" rims aside. Put them in the corner of the garage with your pet dodo bird & your Beta player.


Purchase 15" rims & install tires that provide the handling & stance you want.


If you must stay with 14" rims the BFG tires are hockey puck hard. The Cooper Cobra is a better tire in my opinion. If you buy 15" rims then move up to the Mickey Thompson SR Radials. They are better than anything from BFG or Cooper.

Are you certain those are 75 series tires? My guess is they are 70 series.

15's are going the way of 14's now. Limited choice & getting pricey. You can go 17's and have more choices and the tires will be less.

15" rims are perfect on our cars. 17s looks ridiculous to these old eyes.
