1970 olds cutlass 's' just purchased
Recently purchased a 1970 olds cutlass 's' it has the original motor all the stamping matches a 70 motor but i'm unable to determine if it was manufactured with a 2bl carb or 4bl. From my understanding there would be a difference in compression so hoping it would be the one with the higher compression of course. anyone have any idea what was more common in cutlass 's' models?
also it seems the po installed the front grill and hood off of a 71 cutlass and the rear bumper off of a 72. In near future probably looking to sell so i can get the right ones for the car.

just glad to be a proud olds owner once again

Welcome. I assume you've verified from the VIN that the car is, infact, a 1970 model. The 71 front end and rear bumper obviously can be bolted to a 1970 body shell. The 71 and 72 back bumpers are identical, just the lenses are different. Unfortunately unless you can find the build sheet, there's really no way to know what carb was on the engine to start with. There was a paper tag on the oil fill tube with a two letter code for the engine, but these are usually long gone by now. Short of disassembling the engine to measure the piston dish and cam profile, there's really no way to know.
I figured only way to tell which motor would be to open it up, so guess will have to wait for now. Just trying to check normal stuff, do routine maintanence see what i have.
