Rally wheels for a 1968 442

I’m in the market for a set of ssII Rally wheels for my 1968 442.
I found a set listed that says “
14 x 6 Olds Rally Wheels 1975-87 GM RWD bolt pattern.” Will these fit on mine? And if so are there any differences? Thanks—Billy

Yes they will fit but are wrong style but look close. You need 68-69 wheels only and the beauty rings to match those are hard to find.

This naturally depends on whether you want the wheels to be correct for your car or just to look good. As Gerald correctly points out, the 1968-69 cars used unique 14x6 SSII wheels with bolt-in center caps (please don't call them "rally wheels", that's the name of Chevy wheels ). The 68s actually did not even use the stainless bezels around the five openings, they just had a painted silver edge. If all you care about is the look of SSII/III wheels, the the later snap-in wheels work fine. Also, unless you care about having the correct wheels, I'd use at least 14x7 with 225/70-14 tires, or better yet, 15x7s with a wider choice of tires.

Thanks. I’ve gone for the 14 X 7 wheels with the bezel inserts. And is it true the 68 wheels only came painted gray. Wasn’t it other years they painted the rims the body color? Thanks.

All SuperStock II wheels were painted Argent. The first time you could get SuperStock III (body color) wheels was on the 1970 Indy Pace cars (white) and the 1970 Rallye 350 (Sebring Yellow). 1971 was the first time that you could order SSIII wheels as a stand alone RPO. The Argent SSII wheels were RPO N66. The body color SSIII wheels were RPO N67.

Thanks. The majority of the 68-69 442s that I’ve seen have the SSIIs painted the body color. I guess that choice is made by a lot of people when repaining the car. Color on the wheels does look nice. —Billy

Pretty much all of those 68s have incorrectly applied W-36 stripes too...

I’m having my 442 painted over the winter. What do you recommend I use as reference for the properly painted W 36 stripe? —Billy

How did I know...

Understand that the fender emblems were located differently on stripe cars.

Wow! Great diagram. I’ll have to do some measuring on mine to check. Thanks —Billy
