Break pedal.

First post:
I'm a rookie at best. Anyway, I had my brake booster switched out , and I think that the brake pedal was reinstalled too high. This pushed out my brake switch , causing my lights to stay on. Is the height of the brake pedal adjustable?

You didn't post what year car your working on. It is adjustable by the clevis rod that hooks to the pedal from the booster. The brake switch is also adjustable and has a jamb nut to lock it in place.

Welcome to the group... Vehicle info would help diagnose your problem... Not all vehicles have adjustable connecting rod to the booster... Most all brake light switches are adjustable...

You likely need to readjust the brake light switch. Disconnect the wires. Screw the switch into the clip until it is fully bottomed against the pedal. Now pull up on the pedal until it hits the stop. This will automatically move the switch to the correct location. Reconnect the wires and verify that the stop lights are off with the pedal released. If not, screw the switch in a little at a time until they are.

I'd bet this is it. There are usually 2 holes for the clevis pin and it's probably in the wrong one. Try that first and see what happens. If that doesn't work, try what Joe said.

To clarify, there is no "jamb nut" on the brake light switch, at least not on the A-body cars. The switch fits into a spring retainer that snaps into the bracket that holds the switch. This retainer has formed threads. The switch screws into these threads as I noted, the by pulling the pedal upward, the switch moves backward in the retainer (the threads have a one-way "ratchet" feature) to set the position.

Not from the factory, it didn't. The switch has those threads, but it fits into a clip that looks like this. There are no jamb nuts. This was the design from 1964-on. Read the stop light switch adjustment paragraph in your CSM.

Here's pictures of my brake switch. Seems like it's hitting the pedal too early and the pedal needs adjusting?

Well one thing for sure. The clevis is in the proper hole. The top one shows the same ageing as the rest of the brake pedal.

Allen R. Do you know if it's possible to adjust the brake pedal?

The only adjustment is moving that pushrod to the upper hole. Simple enough - remove the cotter pin on the clevis, wiggle the clevis out. Position it in the upper hole and see if it's any better for you before you lock it in.

Is the clevis threaded on to the rod that comes from the brake booster? There is a little adjustment there by unthreading it so goes farther out which will push the pedal up. You cannot stick it in the upper hole, that's for manual brakes.

Thanks for the info. I'll play with it after work today. I bought a new switch, just in case.
