Looking at buying a 72 Cutlass Supreme convertible, am I getting a good value?

I kinda did an impulse buy. They will give it to me for $19,000. I put $500 down. Will pick it up in a week or so. I've been looking occasionally for a 72 Cutlass Supreme convertible for the last several months. I have not done a lot of work on looking at what is worth what. I liked this one because it is all original. Looks very newish. Was owned by a wealthy guy that had it in a climate controlled building for like 20 years. He died and this new owner bought it and has had it a few years now. The last so many years I've had very concours cars that I'm afraid to drive. So I want a nice car I can drive. I had a 72 Cutlass Supreme hardtop way back when. My friend had a 70 442 in the matador red, white interior, ram air hood and 4 speed. But I don't want one of those as much as that car made me weak in the knees, one of the greatest cars ever made IMO. Bought a 87 Grand National 3 years ago with 10k on it and all original and perfect. I think I have put like 1000 miles on it at most. I'm an old gearhead and I just can't have a old muscle car with an automatic. Would love a 70 Challenger with a 4 speed but I want to be lazy and put it in gear and just drive. My choice is a 72 Cutlass Supreme convertible. I seem to have no second choice. I'm close to retiring and this car would be nice to drive occasionally. So does anyone have an opinion on the value of this 72? I want to think I can buy it at that price ($19,000) and probably sell it at that price somewhere down the road. Even If I have to sell it for a few thousand less I would be OK with that. I like that this one is all original and not restored. That to me makes it worthy.

Thanks
Rodney

Welcome Rodney. I have had two 72 Supreme convertibles and they are great cars. Without pictures nobody is going to be able to give an useful opinion as to value. If it is a really nice car, I think $19,000 is reasonable. Go to Hagerty's website and you can get some idea of value although i would not buy a car based on their value.

I see Cutlii all day near OK and TX that are drivers in good shape and quite a bit less than $19k. Of course, if you want an original survivor you are going to pay more. Get us some pics so we can make sure some guy isn't trying to sell you a bucket of rust.

64,000 miles. Original paint. Original top. I'm not all that fond that he did the drop spindles and aftermarket disc brakes on the front but he says he will give me all the original parts.

Thanks

That's a pretty car but it's not unmolested. It has aftermarket gauges and speakers. The owner also says it has an overdrive automatic. Does it have a 2004R or an aftermarket Gear Vendors unit? Heck, it may even have a 700R4. Plus, the air cleaner has black spatter undercoating on it. I'm pretty certain that's not OE.

Before you bid on it make sure you get the numbers off of the engine. Once you post them someone can tell you if it's the original engine.

Are you looking at the correct car? I clicked on the eBay link I posted and it comes up. Does it come up different for you?? Here is the eBay auction number:
223024681825

Thanks

The link goes to a red 72 Cutlass hardtop since the original listing ended. Is the one you bought the yellow one? It looks pretty sharp. Definitely more original than the red one. The only thing I can see that isn't OE are the tires, but it does have a bias ply spare.

The links you posted are not convertibles and the listing number (223024681825) you posted is not correct.

I bought that yellow one.

“this is a survivor unrestored 1972 Cutlass Supreme convertible with real honest low miles, no rust and no issues- The top and top boot are original, the top works flawlessly ! some minor fraying of hem on top edge, one small place where hinge and folding mechanism marks fabric,,, top does not leak, car does not leak!!!! lots and lots of new parts!!! you just wont find a nicer one of these mildly priced and in private hands, the big collector dealers will ask 30k for this car( and get it eventually).”

The first link seems to be wrong. I think it is the one I copied after I bought it now and paid the $500 deposit. The second one I posted should be the right one.

This is the second one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Oldsmo...vip=true&rt=nc

Just searching Craig's list around the USA it still looks like a nice car at a fair price. I could buy a clean and pretty restored one but this one is a survivor and that is cool so I kinda like having a survivor instead. And as a survivor it looks very nice. Not scuffed and icky. I can't have scuffed and icky.

Thanks
Rodney

All the links go to the same red Cutlass. You have to click on a hyperlink at the top of the page that says the original listing ended.

I'm kinda computer stupid. All the links I posted go to it. But I bought it so that might be the reason. Is the one above correct now? I clicked see original listing.

So back the original question. Is this a good value for this car? I have a few days to think about it before I fly down and drive it back. I put $500 down on it and I would loose that $500 if I backed out. I'm not looking to back out. I just need some opinions if this was a good price to pay.

Another reason I like this one is it is plain yellow. Not that bright attention getting Matador red (although I love the Matador red ones). I can drive it and look cool but not "hey - look at me".

I think you got a good deal as long as it runs and drives well and looks the same in person as in the pictures.

It looks like a solid car in very good condition, so I think that price is within the range of a good buy.

The only item of concern for me is it says it's an original top. Start looking around for a top shop that can install a new one as I wouldn't expect any top to last that many years. These things are fabric and vinyl and deteriorate over time, no matter the miles on them.

One thing I wonder about is the rim color. Most 72's came with body color rims. Could these have been put on afterwards in the car's life? If so I would have them painted body color. If it came from the factory with these I would certainly leave it as is. Possibly it came with hubcaps originally?

Yes, It works for me. The car is Bamboo color (PNT code will be 81 T (Bamboo - Covert Gold vert top) Nice looking car and very solid in appearance. Nice options, and the A65 split back bench seat was a no charge option for that car too.

Nooooo, don't touch them. The A bodies could have come with dog dish wheel covers if the dealer or order form cheaped out, but the SS wheels on the car would be correct. The SSII are argent color (which these appear to be) and the SSIII are the exact same wheel painted body color. Note: your wheels are period correct as they are bolt on center caps. Very nice.

All right. That link worked. I was interested since I just purchased a nearly identical 1971 Cutlass Supreme Rocket 350 convertible of the same color. I'll post pictures when I pick it up next week. Paid $23,500.

It's a great looking car!
I had been following the car about a month or so ago on eBay.
It had a "buy it now" of 16,600. Appeared to have been bought for that. Not 100% certain of that.
If someone else passed on it at that price ( and I am not saying they did) then you would be well served to have someone who is more knowledgeable than you to look at it before you buy it.
$500 is a number I'd walk away before buying the wrong car.
But if it's actually what was/is represented, you aren't much off the mark..IMO

I have a '72 Cutlass Supreme convertible too. I paid just a little less than $19K for mine and it is in similar condition. I think you got a fair deal for that car as long as it runs, drive and rides as described by the seller. By the way, mine is Matador Red with White interior.

If the car looks as good in person as it does in the pics, you got a nice car for a fair price. You can find these from mid teens to 30k. Your car seems to be in upper end condition for a lower end price. Well bought.

I'm late to the scene, it appears the A/C system is not all there and not working?? That's an ouch to me in the Dallas area. I would fix that asap. Overall nice buy, welcome to the Old Olds Club...

I think you got a real good deal. I wouldn’t let my recently acquired 72 Supreme conv go for less than 25K and it’s a 455/200R4 car. It looks like your AC is all there:

Having the car inspected by a knowledgeable 3rd party would be money well spent. We have several authoritarians in the VA area who could make a trip to Hico....

If the car is as the seller is presenting it, the price seems more than fair. If the paint & top are really all original they look to be in amazing condition. If the top has been changed that wouldn't detract from the value for me.
Re value it all comes down to how much you value this car's strong points. When I was looking for my car, I put a real premium on complete & working AC. Some of my friends thought I was crazy, but its what I wanted.
