Hi, All. I bought a 455 (J heads) w/th400 for next to nothing. The block is in real good condition but I need to replace some things. After reading this site for a week I've learned a lot! I plan to put it into my '64 C10 (I know...boo...hiss) but it's going to take time and money.

I know I need the passenger side head, intake manifold, and carb...all cheap parts! I'm not looking to build for performance just stock. Is the Classified Parts Wanted portion of the site a good place to start?

Yep. I'm about 6 miles from Arkansas.

I currently have a nice running 250 Inline 6 but when I buy a pontoon boat I don't want to worry about going up all of the hills around here.

Thanks, Guys. I will post in the wanted section. Maybe I can find some relatively inexpensive stock parts that others have sotting around from upgrading. A stock 455 is much more powerful than my 250!

In my opinion I would op for any other Olds head to replace the "J" heads.
A stock pair of "G" or "Ga" heads would be my go to head. They have factory harden valve seats and will flow way better than the "J" heads. Also and aftermarket aluminum intake will be a better choice than the cast iron one, and perform much better. IMO

Thought I'd update my progress:

Purchased rebuilt G heads for $300.

The push rods and lifters look to be good AND the cam shaft is actually a Comp Cam Dual Energy cam. It is number 42-208-4. Here is it's details http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...csid=1179&sb=2

The pistons are stamped with 30 on them so I assume the engine has already been bored over. There is some rust on a couple of cylinder walls so I figure it will have to be bored over again. I'll be taking the block in to a local machine shop (builds race engines with high recommendations) to see what needs to be done.

I have yet to remove the oil pan (no engine stand yet) to take a look at the crank and bearings. Praying there isn't a spun bearing.

This is my first tear down and "rebuild". It will take time and money, of course, but I cannot wait to get this on my c10!

That is a mild cam for a 455, but it'll probably have a buncha low end torque, but not rev very high.

I think I may have to get a new cam anyway. I mixed the lifters up, dagnabbit!

I see the Engle 18-20 and 20-22 mentioned a lot.

You could just get a new set of lifters.

Before buying a new cam, you should figure out what pistons you have / what the compression ratio is so you get a suitable cam.

Well, here we are 2 years later and I'm finally ready to install the 455. Bored it 60 over and installed a Erson TQ 50 cam thanks to Mike. It has been broken in, and I'm currently cleaning up years of dirt from the crossmember and frame in the C10's engine bay.

Wow! I completely forgot to update this thread! Everything is running great other than a small trans pan oil leak! Hear is a short clip of it idling. Exhaust is true dual 3" with Hooker Aerochamber mufflers exiting after the rear axle. Sounds great and will roast the tires!
