New to oldsmobile need assistance.
I'm a Young chevy kid who recently found the light of oldsmobile been doing alot of research and still need some help my dilemma is I love speed and torque and horse power but own a 87 fleetwood with a 307. Want to do a swap but dont know whether to go with a 350 or a 455?

I had an 87 Caddy with a 307. Mine was a pooch. And a thirsty one at that. Got rid of it in favor of a grocery getter for the wife. Can't really say I miss it, but I never really got to know her that well. Go with the 455 by the way. Big car deserves a big powerplant.

307 with a 700R4? You can go with either the 350 or 455. They will both bolt up. I know what you mean about the 307, it's a bit of a slug. That's why they bolted up the 700R4 behind it and gave it overdrive. Even if you went with a built 350, you would see a big difference in performance. There are still plenty of places that sell components for a rebuild on either a 350 or 455, although as time marches on the supply of engines will start to decline noticeably.
Because you love speed, torque and HP I would go 455. That's a brute monster on torque.

I'd do the 350 for the simple reason that it is externally identical to the 307, all the brackets and mess will bolt up easier, and if you have to keep it on the computer the 350 will work better with it than the 455.
Or you could find an Olds 425- some late 70s Caddys had Cadillac 425s in them. Different engine even though CID is the same. You'd freak a parts guy out for sure with that.

Welcome, sounds like good project. My vote is to build it which ever way you like that fits your budget!! If you look hard enough there are plenty of used well running engines around that you can purchase for pennies on the dollar compared to rebuilding one from scratch!!
Be careful, check them out thoroughly, and good luck!!

As the owner of an 87 Brougham with a 307, I'd say stick with the small block. Nearly identical. And my car is pretty spry I'd say.
And the Caddy will not have a 700R4, at least from the factory. The 700 only went behind Chevys. Your 87 has a 200R4. You can get an adapter to put the 700 behind an Olds, but the Brougham didn't get the 700 until it changed to the Chevy motor in 88 or 89.

All 307 equipped cars have a 200-4r. And definitly going more towards the 455 but seems like all I'm finding is 350 . And if I do go with the 455 what kind of power can I get out of it and what would be the best drivetrain combo ? I have a 8.5 10 bolt in it now what kind of gears should I run?

Welcome to the forums! Great looking car! I plan on doing the same swap on my 98 Regency. I found a 350 out of a 1971 cutlass in a salvage yard about 6 months ago.
It's very common to swap the 307 for a 350 or 403. Many people retain the computer controlled carb with those engine. It will definitely require some tuning, but the ECM should be able to compensate. If you are going small block olds (if you are planning to go chevy, you won't get much help here), use the 307 accessories, but not the intake or exhaust manifolds. The 350 and 403 are a bolt-in. Same mounts, brackets, pulleys, etc. The 455 would fit, but you will need an earlier model carb and distributor. It's a little taller, so hood clearance may be an issue. I would search around this forum. You should be able to piece together the info you need. Also plan on disconnecting and/or removing lots of wiring. If they emissions test in your area, that won't fly. If not, the sky is the limit. You will also need to have the transmission modified. It's not going to live for very long behind a 350, but fortunately, the 200-4r can be beefed up to take abuse.

Thats a nice engine but kinda got a red flag since its only $2000?? And hood clearence isn't to much of a issue. Got a lot of space between the hood and motor. And luckily no emmisions so dont care bout it lol and tranny wise would just go with either a 350 or 400 turbo my 200 is all ready built a lil but dont wanna find out how much it can take when it grenades on a launch.

Appreciate it. and really maybe 3-4 k on the motor. Dont wanna lift my wheels or anything just want something reliable pushing around 400 hp and maybe run in the 13's

See something like that is perfect I was all ready thinking bout getting a full motor and just rebuilding it since I figured that would be alot cheaper then going to mondello

I believe these folks are in florida. Maybe they can do a slightly performance oriented motor for you!! The amount of torque a 455 puts out, you should hit your goal!
