New to C.O. 69 Cutlass horn relay ?

Hello all. I am new to ClassicOlds but have read many posts for advice to similar problems. I have a 69 Cutlass S, is there any way to bypass the horn relay? It seems it is a source for many problems and other older cars I have had, had no relay.

I recently took it to a shop to have the brakes worked on (went to 4 wheel disc brakes) and they had a problem starting it. Well the guy said he did something to the horn relay, and now its messed up. It shorted out the battery, so when i got a new one to put in, it melted the ground wire end at the battery instantly. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Or does anyone know to bypass the relay?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the site. The horn relay outside of operating the horn is just a junction block for power feeds. To melt wires something had to have been hooked up wrong. Those relays are not problematic.

69 relay should be horn and door buzzer functions only three wires go into the bottom of it. Oldcutlass is right it also serves as the junction block to power the rest of the car. Your inner wheelwell should be plastic so check that you are not grounding anything against the inside of the fender? Otherwise it definitely sounds like something is wired way wrong.

Holy crap!
What has the horn relay have to do with brakes? Yes, ok, pull a cable.
A quick check with the chassis service manual via Kurt's website, wild about cars will help.
It should show a good diagram. I prefer the manual itself, but that's just me.

Your shop may be trying to hornswaggel you.
Be careful, something is not right here.
Welcome to CO and good luck with your ride.

The problem is still there after replacing some sketchy wires. Only wire left to check is the battery wire going to the starter.

Tru-blue I couldn't agree more, thats why I'm so upset. They were supposed to do brakes only, not jack with my wiring. At least they didn't charge me for their wiring expertise lol.

I will let you know what i find tomorrow. Thanks

OK so somehow the positive cable from the battery that runs to the starter got pinched by the bottom of the motor. Got it replaced and everything works great. Still wish there was someway to get rid of that annoying key buzzer sound.

Glad you got it figured out. I forget which wire,
but it is one of the small ones you can just unplug
from the relay that will stop that buzzing.
All it is, is the door ajar, or key in the ignition buzzer,
if I remember right.

Think it's the pink wire. First thing I did after getting the car so can't remember for sure.

I think it may be the pink/black wire going into the horn relay.

Shouldn't be difficult to figure out which of those three works the key buzzer. Just leave the key in the ignition with the door open, then start pulling wires until the annoying buzzer stops making noise.

I found an old wiring diagram that shows that it a pink/black wire, but with the wiring nightmare that somebody made this, who knows. It hasn't been a top priority for me just yet, but it is coming up the list fast lol. Thanks everyone

Top priority? Like Hooked, it's the first thing I've always done when buying a GM car:
Fork over cash, take key, shake hands, turn around, open hood, pull pink/black wire, close hood, get in car, drive away.
